Life Legacy


Bruce “Satch” Saustad, 62, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND with his loving family at his side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, January 17, 2011 at United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Rob Kopp and Rev. Jeff Gustafson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM at the church on Monday.

Bruce Keith “Satch” Saustad, the son of Chris and Irene (Nicholson) Saustad was born March 22, 1948 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in Thief River Falls at the United Methodist Church. Satch attended grade school at Northrup School, and then attended Lincoln High School, Thief River Falls, graduating with the Prowler Class of 1966.

In 1969, Satch was drafted into the United States Army. He completed Basic Training, but shortly after was honorably discharged due to medical reasons. Satch returned to Thief River Falls, and re-joined Hartz Wholesale, where he continued to work for the next 24 years. On November 21, 1970, Satch was united in marriage Patricia Barry. Together they had two children, Jenny and Kristen. In 1995 he began working for Digi-Key Corporation. He retired from Digi-Key in April of 2010.

After 24 years together, Satch married his longtime love, Edie Brandli on May 1, 2010.

Only known as Satch to most people, one of his closest friends, Jeff Gustafson began calling him that after Huntz Hall from the Bowery Boys. Satch and Edie loved to travel, visiting many countries such as Ireland, England, the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru, and also Alaska. Mexico was one of their favorites, traveling there every year for the last 22 years. He also enjoyed music, golfing, curling, fishing, spending time with his children, and grandchildren, gardening, and visiting with his many friends. Satch really enjoyed watching the Food Channel and loved to experiment with new foods. Cooking became one of his favorite pastimes. He was a big sports fan, enjoying sports of all kinds. Satch was instrumental in starting Fantasy Football. One of the highlights of Satch’s early life was being able to travel yearly to Detroit to visit his aunt Ruth. This is where he became a fan of every Detroit sports team. Not long ago, Satch and Edie went to Detroit for the opening of Ford Field. While in Detroit they were also able to take in a Thanksgiving Day parade, and see the Detroit Pistons play. He was a proud member of the Amercian Legion Post # 117 and the Elks Lodge #1308.

Satch is survived by his loving wife, Edie of Thief River Falls, MN; his children, Jenny Saustad of Thief River Falls, MN and Kristen Saustad (Mike Herberg) of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Courtney, Gavin, Jayden, Jude, and newest addition, Aysen; sister, Barbara (Alan) Christenson of Mt. Iron, MN; uncle, Earl (Shirley) Nicholson of Califoria; nieces and nephews, Scot (Shari) Christenson of Mt. Iron, MN, Ross (Betty) Christenson of Esko, MN, Jill Christenson of Duluth, MN, Dara (Jon) Maunu of Warroad, MN; 7 great nieces and nephews; many cousins, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
