Alfred Weigel, 86, died on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN.
Alfred (Bernie) Bernard Weigel was born on June 5, 1922 near Victoria, Kansas to the late Andrew and Clementine (Kinderknect) Weigel. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He attended school in Menlo and Sequin, Kansas. On May 28, 1959 he made his re-affirmation of Christian faith and was confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
During World War II, Bernie served in the European Theatre in the U.S. Air Force as Quarter Master Corp. He was united in marriage to Violet Nelson on September 18, 1944 in Seattle, Washington.
Bernie was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, serving on various boards and sang with the church choir. The Weigel's farmed North of Mavie, MN, Marshall County, for 18 years. He also worked at the Municipal Liquor Store for the city of Thief River Falls for 18 years. From 1967 to 1987 Bernie owned and operated Bernies Auto Sales , retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and sang with the Heritage Center Senior Choir for many years. He had a good sense of humor, loved people and had many good friends, and these latter years he really enjoyed his coffee friends. His favorite occupation or pass time was anything to do with cars.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Violet of Thief River Falls, MN; one daughter, Judith (Arnie ) Lane of Augusta, WI; three sons: Darryl (Penny) of New Ulm, MN, Gene (Alfred) (Wendy) of Collinsville, VA and Donovan (Holly) of Plainfield, IL; nine grandchildren: Allen (Jamie) Lane, Jeff (Erica) Lane, Darrin (Roni) Weigel, Jason (Heather) Weigel, Jamie (Tara) Weigel, Ryan Weigel, Mandy (Chad) Horsley, Cory (Michelle, fiance) Weigel, Stacey Weigel, (fianc, Robert); many great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; nieces and nephews: Gary (Marsha) Berens, David (Alice) Berens, and Eddy Berens, Kathleen (Bill) Bauticta, Isabel (Paul) Myers, Carl Jr. (Linda) Kelsey, Linda (Daniel) Newberry, Nina, Sonja Mick, Betty (Lou) Adamson, Robert (Debby) Weigel, Jerry (Barbara) Weigel, Delbert (Rhonda) Eberle, LaVeta Farrell, DeLila (Bobby) Boyd extended family from immediate area: Don (Pat) Jorstad, Gwen (Ed) Solvig, Tim (Kathy) Olson, Wayne (Kathy) Liden, Pam Hruby, Roger (Karen) Hruby, and Debbie (Rick) Stenseth; sisters-in-law, Helen Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, Fern Liden of Ottertail, MN, Lillian Klockman of Thief River Falls, MN, Bette M. Nelson of Townsend, MT and Helen M. Nelson Minneapolis, MN; one brother-in law, Stanley Hruby of Goodridge, MN. as well as many other extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; three brothers; and one grandchild; three nephews and one niece, Robert Jorstad, Ralph and Diane Jorstad, Douglas Nelson, Eddie Berens; four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
