Obituary

Alice Carriere of Crookston, MN, formerly Red Lake Falls, MN, age 96, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Villa St. Vincent, Crookston, MN with her loving family at her side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 6, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bill DeCrans presiding. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Alice Viola Normandin was born on February 3, 1919 in Gentilly, MN the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Degrossillier) Normandin. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Catholic Church in Gentilly, MN and attended country school. Alice quit school when she was 13 years old to take a job working for the county to clean various buildings. She gave that money to her father for him to make the loan payment in order to keep the family farm working. As a young woman, Alice also worked for area farmers during harvest. After leaving home, she moved to Crookston and worked at St. Francis Hospital as a nursing assistant. In 1941, Alice was engaged to Mark Carriere and he went to serve in the United States Army in the European Theater during World War II. The couple was married on November 12, 1945 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Gentilly, MN and they made their home in Red Lake Falls, MN. To this union seven children were born, Charlotte, LeRoy, Leo, Timothy, Albert, Jeannette, and Benita. Alice enjoyed raising her children while they were growing. The family also had beef and dairy cattle, chickens, and a huge garden. She loved picking wild blueberries, playing cards, crocheting, going for walks and even taught her son, Tim how to walk on homemade stilts. Later in life, she worked at St. John's Hospital in Red Lake Falls and after the hospital closed she worked in the dietary department at the school and Sunset Court. Alice also did child care for a local family. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, volunteered on the Ambulance Crew for over ten years, and belonged to the VFW Auxiliary all in Red Lake Falls. Survivors include her children, Charlotte Cruz of Sierra Vista, AZ, LeRoy Carriere of Roseau, MN, Leo Carriere of Roseau, MN, Tim (Carol) Carriere of Red Lake Falls, MN, Albert Carriere of Red Lake Falls, MN, Jeannette (Alan "Moe") Ste. Marie of Red Lake Falls, MN and Benita (Larry) Quast of Hutchinson, MN; grandchildren, Alice, Carolyn, Mark and Elizabeth Cruz, Justin Carriere, Paul (Mary) Carriere, Dominic (Jenae) Ste. Marie, Jill (Alex) Dowdle, Felicia Quast; great grandchildren, Madeline Carriere, Rylan and Autumn Ste. Marie; sister, Leah Audette of Cambridge, MN; sisters-in-law, Alice Ann Normandin of Detroit Lakes, MN and Doris Normandin of Crookston, MN; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mark on March 31, 1975; parents; brothers, Orphier (Leah), Harvey (Florence), Albert (Agnes), Jerome and Maurice Normandin; son-in-law Manual Cruz; grandson, Manual Cruz; brother-in-law, Lester Audette.
