Alice Homstad of Thief River Falls, MN, formerly of Lancaster, MN and Grafton, ND age 83, died Monday December 30, 2013 at Thief River Care center, Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will be held at Riverview Memorial Gardens in Lancaster, MN. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. Alice Hilma Elenor Cedergren was born on September 11, 1930 at home in Orleans, MN in Kittson County. Her parents were Herman and Esther Charlotte (Hanson) Cedergren. She was baptized at the Sikar Lutheran Church near Orleans and confirmed at the Sion Lutheran Church in Lancaster, MN. Alice attended grade school in Orleans, MN and graduated from Lancaster High School in the class of 1948. She was a cheerleader and the homecoming queen. She was also in both school and community plays. Alice married her 7th grade sweetheart, Lawrence Homstad. After several years of being a homemaker, Alice started her first restaurant, Alice's Restaurant in Lancaster in 1967. Later on, she purchased Karl's Pool & Beer Hall in Lancaster, which also featured ceramics. Alice sewed for Arctic Cat and after the death of her husband, she followed her life-long dream of becoming a nurse. At the age of 53, Alice went back to school and received her nursing degree. She worked as a CNA at the hospital in Hallock, MN and following her degree, Alice went to work for the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND, retiring in 2002. Then she moved to Drayton, ND and went to work at Andy's Drive-In. Alice had been a Sunday School teacher & was a member of the Lancaster Legion Auxiliary where she had served as a past president. Alice' hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, collecting China cups, fancy dishes and snowmobiling, but her passion was cooking and baking, especially her donuts, potato salad, meatballs, and buns. Following her move to Thief River Falls she lived at Valley Home and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. As her health declined, Alice moved into Thief River Care Center. Survivors include her children, Lawrence (Charla) Homstad, Jr. of Arvada, CO, Lynnette (Bruce) Nelson of St. Hilaire, MN, Emmy (Thomas) Lawrence of Wausau, WI, Laurel (Roland) Anderson of Drayton, ND and Jay (Kim) Homstad of Drayton, ND; foster daughter, Jody (Jerry) Peterson of Lancaster, MN; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings, Lowell (Alvina) Cedergren, Mikki (Bill) Beck, Shirley (Lowell) Homstad, Curtis (Connie) Cedergren; brother-in-law, Kenneth Kruger; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Homstad; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Homstad, Sr.; parents; great-grandson, Ethan Arens; sisters, Ruth Kruger and Delsie (George) Schulte; brother, Russell Cedergren.
