Obituary

Alice Liden, 79, died on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Tuesday January 4, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. John Voelker, Ph.D. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will be Monday, January 3, 2011 from 5-8 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Saturday.

Alice Martha Schwarz was born on September, 6, 1931 to Adam and Amalia (Keller) Schwarz in Starbuck, Manitoba, Canada. She attended school and graduated in Starbuck, MB. She taught school for two years before she decided to go to nursing school in Winnipeg, MB. She graduated from the Winnipeg College of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1952.

On May 21, 1955 Alice was united in marriage to Donovan Liden. They made their home in Thief River Falls.

In 1952, Alice moved to Thief River Falls where she began working at Northwestern Hospital. One year later she became supervisor of med surg for three years. She then was supervisor of OB for approximately 10 years. She was instrumental in starting up the ICU in Thief River Falls, MN where she spent the next eight years. She then became supervisor of the surgery department in 1973 until retiring in November of 1996. During her nursing career, Alice designed a surgical restraint and she later sold the design to Posey Medical Supply Company. She also supervised the remodeling of the OR Suites at Northwest Medical Center and assisted in the remodeling of the OR Suites in Bemidji, MN.

Alice was an avid curler. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing cards with her friends. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and in 1962 helped establish the Minnesota Nurses Association at Northwest Medical Center. In the 1970s she dealt and sold collector plates. In the late 90s at the age of 68 she did day trading. Her life long passions were caring for her family and her dedication to work.

She is survived by 4 children: Larry (Deb Mostrom) Liden, Randy (Crystal) Liden, Tamra (Dennis) Rantanen, and Jeff Liden, all of Thief River Falls, MN, 9 grandchildren: Ryan, Erin, Allison, Kelsey, Jason, Joshua, Caitlin, Sarah, and Donovan, and 1 sister Ruth (Harry) Canning, Glendale, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, 2 sisters Dagmar Schwarz and Helen Hunter, and her parents.
