Alice Elaine Wold was born November 26, 1920 at home on the family farm near Gatzke, MN the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Erickson) Wold. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Landstad Lutheran Church near Gatzke, MN. Alice attended country school, and continued her schooling at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN. On Saturday, April 12, 1941, Alice Elaine Wold had become Mrs. Ervin Vigen. 1941 would come to be known as not only the year Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the year Penicillin treatment was introduced, and the year gas went to 19 cents a gallon, but also the year that was the beginning of the whole Vigen clan. The original honeymoon cottage was a remodeled chicken coopthose living accommodations lasted only a short time and by the spring a real house had been moved on to replace the original one. April, 1942 brought the arrival of the first little VigenLarry. An upstairs and a bedroom addition were added to the house to accommodate the new Vigen arrivals. By 1951, their 10th anniversary, drive-ins, crew cuts, and convertibles were in, I love Lucy was on TV, Mickey Mantle became a Yankee, and the Vigen clan had expanded to five. After Larry came Marcia, Robby, LeRoy and Susan. By their 20th, in 1961, there were seven altogether. Pat arrived in 1952 and Howard in 1957. As the years went by, Alice did what most mothers of seven would do, kept everyone clean, dry and fed. By 1968 enough of the kids had left home so Alice and Ervin could afford a new house. Between 1968 and 1988, Alice spent 20 years at the Land-O-Lakes turkey plant. 1991 finds Alice keeping busy with quilting, sewing, reading, making lefse and spoiling her grandchildren. Ervin died on December 2, 2004 and Alice remained on the farm until 2008 when she moved into Thief River Falls. Alice was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla, the Grygla VFW Auxiliary, and the Lull-A-While Homemakers Club.
