Ann Newland, 83, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Sanford Hospital, Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Benjamin Carlsen officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 3-8 PM, Monday, January 3, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.
Ann C. Hanson was born on December 31, 1926 at home in Hickory Township, Pennington County, MN, the daughter of Henry G. and Thea H. (Vettleson) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She attended country school district #3.
Ann was united in marriage to Norman Roy Newland on October 2, 1947 in Minneapolis, MN. They lived in Duluth and St. Paul, MN for many years. She worked at Peerless Yale Laundry in Duluth and at American Linen in St. Paul for over 30 years. They retired and moved to Thief River Falls in 1979.
Ann loved being with her family. She liked taking drives and looking for deer and other wildlife. She and her husband Norman enjoyed growing gardens and wild flowers together. She was a wonderful cook, and will be remembered for making excellent oatmeal raisin cookies. She was also proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed making lefse and rice pudding. She enjoyed keeping up on current events and could talk politics with anyone. The needs of Anns family always came first in her life, and she was always thinking of others.
Ann is survived by four children: Robert (Olivia) Newland, Fargo, ND, Joyce (Harold) Arneson, Thief River Falls, MN, Roy (Mary) Newland, St. Paul, MN, Norman (Hope) Newland, Lino Lakes, MN, eight grandchildren: Darrel (Shawn) Flaten, Thief River Falls, MN, Daniel (Stephanie) Newland, Harwood, ND, Mark Flaten, Thief River Falls, MN, Brett Newland, Minneapolis, MN, Cole Newland, Duluth, MN, Nancy (Jason) Eide, Fargo, ND, Melissa Hruza, St. Paul, MN, Norman Newland, Minneapolis, MN; 12 great grandchildren, two sisters Betty (ED Huderle) Knoll, Warren, MN and JoAnn (Maynard) Laymon, Warren, MN, sister in law Alma Hanson, Thief River Falls, MN, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman, sisters Alice and Ardith, brothers, Harold, Clarence, and Arthur, granddaughter Shelly Flaten, and nephew Bruce Laymon.
