Arlie Hams, 84, of Red Lake Falls, MN died on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Hillcrest Senior Living Center in Red Lake Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 10:30 AM in St John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Reverend John Bumgardner Officiating. Burial will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery near Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will be held on Thursday 5 - 8 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at St. John Lutheran Church and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Arlie Clyde Hams was born on July 18, 1927 in Springbrook Township, Kittson County, MN, to Delbert & Lois (Simmons) Hams. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Karlstad MN and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Red Lake Falls on January 28, 1951. Arlie attended school in Springbrook and Deerwood Townships. He lived with his parents until 1943 at which time he went to work in Bremerton, WA in the shipyards until entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific aboard the L.S.T. 1010 and the U.S. AO22 Cimmaron. He returned home from the service in February of 1947. He was in the Naval Reserve from February, 1947 until December 12, 1952. Arlie was married to Lila Weiss on October 23, 1950. They made their home in Red Lake Falls. He attended Hansen's Mechanical Trade School in Fargo, ND from August, 1948 until May, 1949. In June of 1949 he moved to Red Lake Falls where he worked as a mechanic for several motor companies. In 1954 he went into business for himself, operating Hams Pure Oil Service Station & Café until 1957. He then built his own service station called Hams Texaco and ran that business until 1969. In the fall of 1969 he started teaching Auto Mechanics for the Vocational Center in Red Lake Falls. He received his Vocational Education Degree from BSU by going to off campus classes while he was teaching. He was the instructor for auto, small engines and electronics until his retirement in June of 1989. He also ran a small engine and electronics shop at his home. He loved fishing, hunting and camping. Arlie & Lila spent many years traveling & camping in their motorhome. After Lila passed away he spent many summers at Springsteel Island fishing on Lake of the Woods. He loved spending time there with his son-in-law and daughter, Mike & Kathy and their family. Spending time with family & friends was very important to him and he loved every minute of it. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and spent several years on the church council. He was a member of St. John's Men's Club; holding many offices. He also taught Sunday School for many years. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Red Lake Falls. Arlie was preceded in death by his wife, Lila in 1995; his parents, brothers Louie, Gordon, Stanley, Elwood, Russell and twin brother Arnold, sisters Eva, Della and Marcella, son-in-law Mike LaPlante. He is survived by one daughter, Kathy LaPlante, Red Lake Falls, MN, three grandchildren, Amanda (Darcy) Cardinal, Red Lake Falls, MN, Paul (Shelly) LaPlante, Roseau, MN, Aaron LaPlante, Minneapolis, MN and great grandchildren Hope, Anna and Josi Cardinal, Red Lake Falls, MN, Kilah and Teagan LaPlante, Roseau, MN, four sisters-in-law, Lucille Hams, Stephen, MN, Eunice Hams, Red Lake Falls, MN, Evelyn Wagner, Crookston, MN and Marie Casavan, Red Lake Falls, MN, very special friends Marne & Shirley Thompson, special family friend Jeff DeLoss, and several nieces and nephews. Also Hospice CNA Jennifer Benke & all other Hospice personnel who cared for Arlie the past three and one-half years.
