Arlyn Nelson, of Rosemount, MN, passed away at the VA Health Care Center in Minneapolis, MN, on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the age of 67.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, May 20, 2019 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Fort Snelling, MN, Assembly Area #4.
Arlyn DuWayne Nelson was born on June 16, 1951 to Doris (Erickson) Nelson Hamness in Karlstad, MN. Arlyn grew up in Greenbush, MN. While growing up, Arlyn loved to fish. His uncle, Eldor Erickson took him fishing several times along with his cousins Debbie (Erickson) Piche and Dennis Erickson.
In 1965 Arlyn and his mom moved to Richfield, MN, when Doris married Nels Hamness. Arlyn attended Richfield High School and in 1968 he enlisted in the Army. He served one tour in Vietnam. He was very proud of his military service and he received several medals. Arlyn's rank in service was SP4E4, honorably discharged.
Arlyn worked at Banta Corporation in St. Paul as a Journeyman for 16 years. He was also an auto mechanic and locksmith.
Arlyn had several special friends in Richfield that he considered family. They met every week at Denny's Restaurant for breakfast.
Arlyn is survived by his step-brother, Gary (Carolyn) Hamness of Thief River Falls, MN; nieces, Janelle Hamness of Kansas City, MO and Jarilyn Hamness of St. Louis Park, MN; nephew, Jeffrey Hamness of St. Paul, MN; uncle, Roynell (Gloria) Erickson of Apache Junction, AZ; special nieces, Monica Tennessen of Richfield, MN, and Jessica Clausen (Goddaughter) of Richfield, MN; nephew, Ahren Grunow of Richfield, MN; several cousins, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Hamness; step-father, Nels Hamness; grandparents, Elling and Sophie Erickson and Ralph and Nannie Hamness; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
