Arthur B. Hanson, 82, of Thief River Falls, formerly Plummer, MN; died Thursday, November 17, 2005 at Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN.
Arthur Birdeen Hanson was born May 24, 1923 at home in Hickory Township, Pennington County, MN, the son of Henry G. and Thea H. (Vettleson) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. The family lived along the eastern edge of Pennington County, MN. Art attended school in District #3. He helped out on the family farm and worked for neighbors on their farms. He also trapped. At the age of 21, Art entered the United States Army, November 21, 1944. He served his country in Germany, Belgium, and France. After his honorable discharge, August 18, 1946, he returned to the United States.
Art worked on the family farm for a couple years, and then moved to the iron range where he worked for Oliver Mining Company, Hibbing, MN. He then did custom combining in the Midwest for a couple years. Art then worked in construction and road work in Minneapolis, MN. This is where he met his future wife Alma. On November 10, 1956, Arthur was united in marriage to Alma Kangas at Menahga, MN in the parsonage. They newly married couple made their home in Minneapolis before buying a farm by Plummer. Art and Alma traveled and worked back and forth sharing their time between Plummer and Minneapolis. They bought a different farm near Plummer and milked cows and farmed. Then Art, Clarence and Alma bought what became Hansons Bar in Plummer in the late 1960s and operated it for over 15 years, after which Clarence became the operator. In June of 2003, Art and Alma moved into Thief River Falls, MN.
Art was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plummer, MN, a member of Plummer American Legion and had served as President, Thief River Falls 40 et 8 and VFW. He served on the Plummer Fire Department for 15 years. He enjoyed music and loved to play his guitar and sing. Art and Alma never missed a family event and shared their love and support for their family. Art liked to hunt and fish, play pinochle, garden and playing Santa for years. Art enjoyed the simple things in life, he wasnt a materialistic person at all.
Arthur is survived by wife, Alma, Thief River Falls, MN; sisters, Ann Newland, Thief River Falls, MN, Betty (Frank) Knoll, Warren, MN and JoAnn (Maynard) Laymon, Warren, MN; 20 nieces and nephew; 37 great nieces and nephews; 11 great great-nieces and nephews a brother-in-law, Ted Haugen, Plummer, MN.
Preceded in death by parents, sisters, Alice and Ardith, brothers, Harold and Clarence, niece, Shelly Flaten and nephews, Bruce Laymon and Ronald Kangas.
