Obituary

Barbara Champ, a cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, at the age of 88, in Grand Forks, ND, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 4, 1938, in Thief River Falls, MN, Barbara lived a life filled with vibrant moments and warm connections.

Barbara's career began at Digikey during its humble beginnings in a garage, where her commitment and hard work laid the foundation for the successful company it would become. She later became an esteemed employee at Delta Airlines, from which she retired in 1999. Her professional journey showcased her dedication and resilience, traits that endeared her to many.

A proud graduate of Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, and Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, Barbara held education close to her heart. It was through learning that she discovered her passion for engaging with others. Known for her welcoming personality, she was always eager to visit with anyone who would lend an ear. Her upbeat attitude and unique approach to life made her a beloved friend and confidante. Barbara was also the family's historian, preserving the memories and stories that connected her loved ones.

Barbara's zest for life was evident in her hobbies and interests. She found joy in nurturing her African violets, the vibrant colors reflecting her enthusiasm for beauty and nature. She loved the challenge and thrill of crossword puzzles and eagerly tuned in to watch Jeopardy! every chance she got. Fond memories of her leaping five feet in the air after a bird startled her from the mailbox, or her daring escapades snow sledding with neighborhood children, are just fragments of the laughter and joy she brought to those around her.

Her family was her greatest pride and joy. Barbara will be remembered for her accomplishments, including graduating college, witnessing her daughters’ marriages, and celebrating the births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Kymberly Gorr of Thief River Falls, MN; Mary (J.J.) Gray of Norfolk, VA; her brother, Dean (Joan) Kaushagen of Thief River Falls, MN; her sister, Karen (Harvey) Meehl of Rice, MN; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Monica Howe, Christopher Barton, Misty Southerland, Jack Gray, and Jillian Gray, and her great-grandchildren, Aiden Fann, Aalecia Bradley, Landon Olesen, Leland Olesen, Talon Witten, along with many nieces and nephews who looked up to her with admiration.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and William Kaushagen, whose love and guidance shaped the remarkable woman she became.

With a spirit that truly embodied the phrase “doing it her way,” Barbara Champ will be fondly remembered for her humor, warmth, and the indelible mark she left on the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her. She now rests peacefully, a testament to a life well-lived.
