Bernard J. Remick, 92, of Red Lake Falls, MN died on Friday, October 1, 2010 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, MN.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, October 15, 2010 at St. Josephs Church, Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Chuck Huck presiding.
Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Red Lake Falls, MN.
Visitation will be 5-8 PM, Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service, Red Lake Falls with a 7 PM prayer service and for one hour prior to the service at the church, Friday.
Mr. Remick was born in Crookston on September 15, 1918 to George and Antoinette Remick. He attended rural school at Badger Creek and then Lafayette High School, Red Lake Falls, graduating in 1937. He attended business school for accounting and insurance in Superior, Wisconsin. In 1939 he married Madeline Amiot of Red Lake Falls. Madeline died of cancer in 1997. They were married 57 years.
Bernard worked for Thibert Chevrolet and Buick as a bookkeeper and parts manager. He also worked for Garden Valley Telephone in public relations while the company was undergoing extensive service upgrades, converting to a dial telephone system. When this job was completed he went to work as assistant cashier for Security State Bank of Oklee, making loans and supervising the insurance department.
In 1964, Remick moved his family to Whitefish, Montana, where he assumed the position of Executive Vice President of the newly-chartered First State Bank. In 1967, he was recruited by Valley State Bank of Yankton, South Dakota, to serve as Executive Vice President. In 1971, Remick purchased stock in First National Bank of Libby, Montana. He also served as President of that institution until his retirement in 1984 when he and Madeline moved to Kalispell, Montana.
Madeline Remick, Bernards wife, died of cancer in 1997. They were married 57 years. They had 7 children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bernard and Madeline celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with 130 guests in Libby, Montana.
After Madelines death, Bernard moved to Red Lake Falls to be closer to family and friends. In 2001 he married Jeannette Carrier. The couple divorced in 2008.
Community and church were very important to Bernard. Even in retirement, Bernard made civic contributions, serving as treasurer of the HRA board and as chairman of the Senior Nutrition Council. As a boy, he was an active 4-H member and was awarded a trip to the Minnesota State Fair and numerous prizes. While living in Oklee, Remick was a city councilman and then mayor. He also served as secretary-treasurer of Oklees ambulance and fire department. Bernard was a member of the Elks for 30 years and was also a Rotarian. He also assumed some state-wide leadership positions, serving on the board of directors for the Montana Bankers Association Insurance Group.
In his personal life, Bernard loved to spend time with his large family and relished family reunions. He especially loved hunting deer and antelope with his sons and grandsons in Montana. Bernard was also known as an avid reader and Minnesota Twins fan. He was very proud of his longevity and recently celebrated his 92nd birthday with family. He also attended his 73rd class reunion this past summer.
Bernard Remick was preceded in death by three sons, Ronald Remick of Fort Benton, Montana, Douglas Remick and Andrew Remick, both of Helena, Montana. He is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Morey of Hamilton, Montana, and Suzanne Combs of Peoria, Arizona, and two sons, Dwight Remick of Othello, Washington, and Craig Remick of Omaha, Nebraska. He has 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
