Berneice Maxine Chensvold was born on August 17, 1924 in Ossian, Iowa, the daughter of Arndt Magnus and Mae Sophia (Osterhus) Chensvold. She was baptized, as an infant, at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian and was also confirmed at First Lutheran Church. She graduated from West Union High School in 1942. Following High School she attended Luther College in Decorah, IA for teaching.

Berneice was united in marriage to Harley Lincoln Frey on December 19, 1943. The couple made their home in West Union, where they farmed. They then moved to Fergus Falls, MN for three years, while her husband went to Seminary. After he finished seminary, they moved to Westby, WI, where she worked as a nurse. Her husband was a Pastor, so they lived in several places where he pastored and she worked as a nurse, including Toronto, SD, Crosby, ND, and Maddock, ND. The couple moved to West Union, IA, where they managed a caf for his brother; then to Mason City, IA and served the church there and in Forest City, IA. Berneice also worked at these church and at a clothing store.The couple then moved to Fort Dodge, IA, where they managed a group home for the mentally handicapped. The couple then moved to Platte, SD for 20 years, where they retired. She worked at several jobs until they opened the Aristocrat Inn Restaurant in Platte. She was the founder of Aristo Pie Company, and these pies are still found in stores today. She retired from the Pie Company in March of 2003 and then began working at the nursing home in Platte, SD helping feed the residents. She often baked cakes, breads, and jellies and would visit the elderly ladies of Platte sharing her baked goods and praying with them.

Berneice was a spiritual woman, who had a profound conviction to her faith and love for the Lord Jesus. When she was diagnosed with cancer, her main concern was her grandchildren, family and friends knew the Lord.

Berneice is survived by four children: Janice (Rev. George) Davis, Thief River Falls, MN; Diane (Gerald) Sutton, Ogilvie, MN; Steven (Marie) Frey, Platte, SD; Ruth (Charles) Anholt, Platte, SD; 15 grandchildren: Paul (fiance Kelly), Nebraska City, NE; Mark (Jennifer) Davis, Thief River Falls, MN; Joel Davis, Fergus Falls, MN; John Davis, Bloomington, MN; Luke (Kyla) Davis, Maple Grove, MN; Marcy (Scott) Hoyles, Coon Rapids, MN; Valerie (Mark) Honey, Hopkins, MN; Kipp, Kayla, Kory Sutton, Ogilvie, MN; Zachariah (Robin) Frey, Parker, CO; Jeremiah (Kelly) Frey, Guadalajara, Mexico; Dinah Frey, Stockton, CA; Hannah (Roger) Vanden Bos, Platte, SD; Heather Anholt, St. Paul, MN. 12 great grandchildren: Cheyanne, Talore, Molly, Mara, Josephine, Jacob, Brittany, Katie, Tyler, William, Braydon, Emma; one brother Curtis (Delores) Chensvold, West Union, IA; three sisters in law: Karen Chensvold, West Union, IA; Gertrude Witt, Elkader, IA; Lavanna Frey, West Union, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1995, and brother Leslie Chensvold.
