Bertha Hesse, 94, died on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at Northwest Medical Center, CNC Unit, Thief River Falls, MN.

Bertha Shaack was born on June 30, 1910 in Argyle, MN, the daughter of Mathias John and Elizabeth (Diedrich) Schaak. She was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith and attended Country School near Plummer, MN. Following High School she attended Bemidji State Teachers College. Bertha taught school near Hazel and Plummer.

On June 8, 1936 Bertha was united in marriage to Clarence Lambert Hesse in Plummer, MN by Reverend Augustine Zellekins. Following their marriage Bertha enjoyed being a housewife and raising their children. She also cooked at Ingas Caf.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, embroidering and sewing and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Bertha was a member of St. Bernards Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild.

Bertha is survived by six children: Dwayne Hesse of St. Louis Park, MN, John (Priscilla) Hesse of Thief River Falls, MN, Vincent (Gloria) Hesse of Thief River Falls, MN, Joanne (Edward) Hesse of Ramsey, MN, Joseph (Betty) Hesse of Backus, MN and Jerome (Connie) Hesse of Thief River Falls, MN; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; one daughter, Rozanne Holen; one brother, John Schaak; and three sisters: Gertrude Schaak, Laura Shumway and Clara Van Risswghem.
