Betty Jean Schmitke was born September 15, 1931 at Donaldson, MN, to Carl and Alvina (Baier) Schmitke. She grew up at rural Stephen, MN, where she was raised in the Christian Faith. In 1949, she graduated from the Stephen High School.

In September of 1951, Betty was married to William Waterworth of Newfolden. The couple made their home and raised their family on their farm northwest of Newfolden.

Betty was active as a 4-H volunteer leader. She taught Sunday School and worked with the Ladies Aid at Bethania Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden. She also enjoyed reading and gardening.
