Obituary

Burton Raymond Carlson was born on May 26, 1922 on the original Carlson Homestead in Emardville Township, the son of Carl S. and Eda E. (Arlt) Carlson. He was baptized on June 11, 1922 in the Lutheran faith and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Redeemer Church. He attended Red Lake County Public School District #3-Hawthorne. Burton entered the United States Navy on October 26, 1943, where he completed Naval Training School (Diesel) and attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa for additional Machinists Mate Training. On April 13, 1946 he reached rank of Motor Merchants Mate 3rd Class.

Burton was united in marriage to Joyce Mabel Rosten on April 17, 1946 in Oklee, MN. He was employed by the Red Lake County Highway Department and farmed for the past 57 years.

He enjoyed working with metal and was capable of repairing almost anything. His hobbies included fishing and hunting. He was an animal and wildlife lover. Most of all, Burton loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was a member and an elder of Redeemer Lutheran Church, a member of the Plummer School Board for 12 years, American Legion Post #623 and their farm was a 1994 Century Farm. Burton and Joyce also received the 2000 Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award.

Burton is survived by his wife, Joyce of Plummer, MN; three children: Scharlene (Don) Fox of Plummer, MN, Robert (JoEllen) Carlson of Moorhead, MN and Paula (Jason) Cater of Plummer, MN; six grandchildren: Debra (Scott) Greelis of Moorhead, MN, Matthew (Kristi) Carlson of Moorhead, MN, Coralie Carlson of Miami, FL, David (Rachel) Fox of Owatonna, MN, Adam Cater of Plummer, MN and Zachary Cater of Plummer, MN; one great grandson, Jack Greelis of Moorhead, MN; one brother, Merlin (Judy) Carlson of Red Lake Falls, MN; two sisters: Violet (Warren) Willenburg of Lewisville, TX and Jane (Gerry) Robbins of Pine City, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, Anita Carlson.
