Calvin Sorenson of Thief River Falls, MN, died Friday, November 28, 2014 at the Freedom Living Center in Oklee, MN, at the age of 84. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, with Rev. Frank Ehling officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held from 10: 00 AM until 11:30 AM on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls. Calvin Christian Sorenson was born May 27, 1930 the son of Walter and Sadie (Omdahl) Sorenson in New Hope Township, Brown County, South Dakota. In 1932 the family moved to the Omdahl homestead in Mayfield Township, Pennington County, MN. He attended rural grade schools in Mayfield Township, District 60 and District 35. Calvin attended Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN. As a teenager and young man he worked for area farmers and drove beet truck and potato truck in East Grand Forks, MN. After high school, Calvin took over the family dairy farm. In 1972, Calvin was united in marriage to Marion Mehrkens. They continued to dairy farm and raise small grains and hay. Calvin sold the dairy cows in 1992. He was proud that there were dairy cows on his place for 60 years in a row. He continued to raise a few beef cattle "to decorate the pasture," until 1999. Calvin enjoyed deer hunting, listening to old-time music, playing cards, watching westerns, reading, and reminiscing about the "good old days" over a hot cup of coffee. He was a past member of the National Farmer's Organization. Calvin is survived by his wife, Marion Sorenson; daughter, Carol (Dale) Kolseth of Plummer, MN; granddaughter, Lisa Kolseth of Plummer, MN; sister-in-law, Verla (Donavan) Erlandson of Thief River Falls, MN; brothers-in-law, Albert (Kathy) Mehrkens and Darrel (Sherry Sorenson) Mehrkens, both of Thief River Falls, MN; nieces and nephews, Donovan (Barb) Culkins and Richard (Carol) Culkins, both of Plummer, MN, Gloria (Randy) Cedergren of Lancaster, MN, Doreen (Mark) Bjerknes of Grand Forks, ND, Janice (Gary) Novotny of Hawley, MN, Nancie (Mick) Brekke of Thief River Falls, MN, Lois Fredrick of Two Harbors, MN, and Dean Manderud of Duluth, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Sadie Sorenson; brothers, Leroy Culkins, Raymond (Nellie) Culkins, sister, Lila (Albert) Manderud; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marvin and Rodena Mehrkens and brother-in-law, Roy Mehrkens.
