Carl Lorentz Reed, Jr., was born March 4, 1931 in St. Paul, MN. Carl's parents were Jessie Nan Newman and Carl Lorentz Reed, Sr. Carl, the first born and only son of Jessie and Carl, lived at 1378 Payne Avenue on St. Paul's east side. His father was employed by Manners-Motz, a wholesale plumbing distributor. Carl attended Farnsworth Elementary School until he and his mother and younger sister moved to South St. Paul. In 1941, Carl, his mother and sister moved from South St. Paul to Cook, MN. Carl often hitched a ride on a steam engine with his engineer friends, from his home to the creamery where his mother worked as secretary and bookkeeper. It was in Cook, that Carl learned the Finlander's way of enjoying a real sauna, ending with a jump into a snow bank. For Carl, this was followed by a bout with pneumonia. The 1945-46 school year, found Carl, a freshman, at Mahtomedi High School at White Bear Lake, MN, where his mother was secretary to the school superintendent. For the next four years, he excelled in playing basketball and football. In football, both his junior and senior years, he made the "All Conference Team" in the St. Paul area. During his high school years, Carl earned his Private Pilot's License. Following graduation he enlisted in the USAF and during the next four years was enrolled in many USAF aviation schools, graduating with high scores to become a Crew Chief. He served in the Pacific arena during the Korean conflict and was Honorably Discharged in January, 1954. On July 29, 1954, Carl married Pauline (Polly) Louise Culver in Randolph Heights Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. They made their home in St. Paul until 1956, when they moved with their one year old son to Fridley, MN. Carl was an aviation mechanic for Northwest Airlines and later for 3M Company. After earning his Commercial Pilot's License he flew corporate aircraft for 3M Company out of St. Paul until 1969. In 1970, Carl and Polly with sons Scott and Kirk and daughter Carla, moved to Thief River Falls, MN. There Carl was an Instructor for 22 years in the Aircraft Mechanics program of the Area Vocational Technical Institute (name changed to Northland Community/Technical College). Carl (called "Bud," because he was a Junior), was an avid railroad modeler. His greatest joy was having children and adults of all ages come to watch his railroad in operation. He took pleasure in the fact that because of his example and encouragement, his family members and several other young people have been added to the roll of "rail buffs." Sunday School teacher, Bible Camp director and member of Gideon's International were activities Carl enjoyed and participated in with energy. He and his wife, Polly retired from teaching in 1991 to enjoy their home in Thief River Falls, MN, filled with happy memories of children, grandchildren and friends. Carl is survived by loving wife of 61 years, Polly, Thief River Falls, MN; sons, Scott (Joy), North Oaks, MN, Kirk (Laura), Naples, FL, and daughter, Carla Hruby, Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Langness, Fargo, ND, Kelly (James) Lee, Mounds View, MN, Luke and Naomi Reed, Naples, FL, Craig (Megan), Jonathan (Erica), and Nathan Hruby, Thief River Falls, MN; great-granddaughter, Eden Hruby; sister, Sonia N. Blanc, Blaine, MN; nephews, Rob (Patricia) Blanc and Steve Blanc; niece, Jeannan (Patrick) Keefe; several great-nieces and great-nephews, relatives, and friends.
