Carter was born February 22, 1943 in Norfolk, VA, the son of Carter Hastings and Ellen D. (Ely) Barnes. Carter grew up in Norfolk, was baptized and confirmed in Knox Presbyterian Church, and graduated from Maury High School. Carter's college degree from Old Dominion in Norfolk was a BS in History with his Masters in Russian History also from Old Dominion. He spent the last thirty years working Construction Management of hospitals for the Sisters of St Francis in Peoria, Illinois and McCarthy Brothers in Port Gervais, New York. Perhaps the reason for Carter's love of history was living in Virginia and taking family vacations as a child to the battlefields of the Civil War or perhaps because he was born on President Washington's birthday. Carter served in the US Army June 13, 1967-June 9, 1969 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant, Field Artillery. He served with the 82d Airborne Division, USARPAC-Vietnam. Carter married Mary Kay Olson August 6, 1982 and had daughter Lindsay Ellyn Barnes. Carter's main joy in life, as well as his family, was traveling to the ocean for surf fishing at Ocracoke Island, North Carolina where he hosted many family and friends. His Blackbeard Pirate stories were a delight to his daughter Lindsay as she was growing up and he shared those with his nieces and nephews. His last vacation there was in the spring of 2011 and he was still trying to figure out how to get there again when the drive became too difficult due to his Parkinson's disease. Carter had a love for photography. Many of his friends are the lucky recipients of his work. His pictures were printed right at home where he spent hours in front of the computer editing to make each one just right. One of his other artistic talents was pottery. He enjoyed working on the wheel, mixing colors, and firing the pottery in his own kiln. Carter maintained a love of reading throughout his lifetime as well as a good cigar. Carter is survived by his wife, Mary Kay; step-daughter Cathy (Welborn) Riorden, Post Falls, Idaho; sister, Helen Jean (Barnes) Bellamy, Suffolk, VA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lindsay; parents; grandparents Hellen (Carter) Ely and Edward Day and Walter and Amelia Barnes.
