Carter Hjelle, 76 of Mountain Home, AR formerly of Bemidji and Stephen, MN passed away on June 18, 2023 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, AR.
Service of the Word will be held at 3:30 PM on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen, MN with Father Bob Schreiner presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Stephen City Cemetery.
Carter Leonard Hjelle was born on July 31, 1946 in Warren, MN the son of Carl and Clarice (Hjelle) Hjelle. He was baptized into the Christian faith. He attended school in Stephen, MN and graduated from the AC in Crookston in 1964. Carter attended NDSU in Fargo, ND for two years and earned an Associate Degree and he remained an avid Bison fan throughout his life!
He returned to rural Stephen following his college years and took over the family farm.
Carter married Catherine Cook and to this union six children were born: Ryan, Trevor, Greg, Thomas, Kirk and Megan. He loved being a father and was very excited to be a grandfather!
He enjoyed fishing and had one of his muskies in the Fishing Hall of Fame. Carter enjoyed time on the water, golfing, curling and spending time with his family water skiing.
In 1995, Carter married Kathy (King) Boben in Thief River Falls. They moved to Rochester, MN for a few years before purchasing The Boat Shop-T & M Marine in Bemidji which they owned and operated for 22 years, retiring in 2021.
The couple enjoyed traveling in the winter months for 24 years to Treasure Island, FL.
Survivors include his loving wife, Kathy; children, Trevor, Thomas (Amanda) and their daughter, Lauren, and Megan; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his children, Ryan, Kirk and Greg; and his parents.
