Carvel Gillund, 91, died on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Phil Rokke officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Monday at the Church. Carvel Benard LeRoy Gillund was born on November 5, 1920 in Nome, ND, the son of Benard and Palma (Scramstad) Gillund. He was baptized in St. Petri Church in Nome. When Carvel was a young boy his family moved to Newfolden, MN. He attended school at New Main Township. Carvel enlisted in the United States Army October of 1942. While in the service he served in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, 3 Overseas Service Medals, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. Carvel was a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #2793. After his time in the service, he farmed and raised cattle. On January 31, 1941, Carvel was united in marriage to Ruby Garfve in Newfolden, MN. To this union three children were born, Gerald, Janice, and Jonette. They made their home on their farm near Newfolden. Starting in the 1950's through the 1970's Carvel helped construct the Grand Forks Air Force Base, was the Supervisor of the New Main Township, worked for Thygeson Contruction, and also for Artic Cat. In 1995 following Ruby's death, Carvel moved into Newfolden. In 2008 he moved to Thief River Falls and has lived at the Thief River Care Center for the past four years. Carvel enjoyed hunting, playing cards, bingo, dancing, and spending time with his family and friends. Carvel is survived by his children, Gerald (Geraldine) of Middle River, MN, Janice Schwartz of Thief River Falls, MN, and Jonette Staie (Gary Klemetson) of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren, Jay (Nancy) Gillund of Newfolden, MN, Brian (Kelly) Gillund of Middle River, MN, and Cody (Brenda) Gillund of Middle River, MN, Murrie (Jason) Keller of Badger, MN, Rhonda (Randy Carter) Noel of Thief River Falls, MN, Peggy Eckert of Bagley, MN, Kenneth (Michelle) Schwartz of Grand Rapids, MN, Paula Carreon of Edinburg, TX, Pamela (Scott) Melby of Gree; nbush, MN, Priscilla (Jason) Berg of Newfolden, MN; 25 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Enderlin, ND and Marion (Merlin) Beseman of Crosby, MN; sisters-in-law, Sandra Larson of Goodridge, MN and Barbara (Ron) Benke of Newfolden, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, his parents; great-grandchild, Chaney Faith Gillund; son-in-law, David Schwartz; brother, Paul Gillund; brother-in-law, George Johnson.
