Christine A. Johnson, 97, died Monday August 1, 2005 at Oakland Park Nursing Home, Thief River Falls, MN.
Christine Amanda Thompson was born January 17, 1908 in her parents log home in New Solum Township, Marshall County, MN the daughter of Louis and Anne Jonsdotter (Sjolsvold) Thompson. She was baptized at Rindal Lutheran Church on May 3, 1908.
Christine attended Columbus Elementary School in New Solum Township and attended Warren High School where she graduated from in 1925. She attended Bemidji State College for one year and farmed with her brothers in the summers. She taught at Pleasantview School in Mud Lake, Columbus School in New Solum, and Whiteford School until 1938 when she married Edgar Johnson. The couple was united in marriage on June 26, 1938 at parental home in New Solum Township.
They operated the Johnson Farm in Como Township until 1940 when they purchased a farm in New Solum Township. After Edgar died July 19, 1948, she then ran a millinary shop in Thief River Falls with her sister, Inga. She then taught school four years in Gatzke and one year in St. Hilaire while attending several summer sessions at Bemidji State College, receiving her B.S. Degree July 16, 1965. She also taught the 5th grade for one year at Knox Elementary and sixteen years at Washington Elementary in Thief River Falls.
Christine enjoyed reading poetry, quilting, gardening, playing whist, doing craftwork and working crossword puzzles. She also loved going to dances, when she was younger and enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren. Christine has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls since 1949 where she was active in Esther Circle. She also belonged to the Rosebank Historical Association, State of Minnesota Teachers Retirement Association, and Rindal Cemetery Association.
Survivors include son, Michael E. (Linda) Johnson of Newfolden, MN; four grandchildren, Natalie (Don) Lagerstrom of McGrath, MN, Jennifer (Paul) Johnson of Thief River Falls, MN, Steven (Rosemary) Johnson of Thief River Falls, MN and Wayne L. Johnson of Newfolden, MN; twelve great grandchildren, Rachael, Eric, Kyle, Nicholas, Michael and Alisha Lagerstrom, Andrew and Rebecca Johnson, Anna Elizabeth Johnson, Ty Johnson, Brandon and Paige Bruggeman; one great-great granddaughter, Kiera Lagerstrom; several nieces and nephews also survive including Janice (Ralph) Ekelund of Moose Lake, MN.
She is preceded in death by husband, Edgar; daughter, Patricia Henning; seven brothers, Ted, John (infant), John, Arthur, Henry, Lawrence, and Oliver; three sisters, Louise Hanson, Anna Schocker, and Inga Payne; three nephews, Hilmer Hanson, Henry Thompson, and Darwin Johnson; and one niece, Anne Schocker.
