Delwin W. Schob, 83, died on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 P.M. Monday, April 23, 2007 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Monsignor Timothy McGee presiding. Burial will be in St. Bernards Catholic Church Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer service on Sunday evening and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Delwin Walter Schob was born on May 8, 1923 in Fond du Lac, WI, the son of Charles and Fanny (Hamilton) Schob. He was baptized as an infant at the United Methodist Church in Fond du Lac, WI and confirmed in the Catholic faith in 1943 in Chalon Sur Marne, France, while he was in the service. He graduated from Goodridge High School in Fond du Lac, WI. He worked at Combination Door Company, Fond du Lac in 1941 and in 1942 he started working for the Soo Line Rail Road.
Delwin entered the United States Army on January 23, 1943 and was Honorably Discharged on December 3, 1945. He earned the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European Theater Ribbon, four Bronze Battle Stars, Overseas Service Bars and the Good Conduct Medal. After the Germans surrendered, their outfit was made MPs, to guard the Nazi War Criminals for the Nuernberg Trials.
Delwin was united in marriage to Joan Elizabeth Schindelholtz on January 8, 1944 in Richmond, VA. Following his Honorable Discharge he returned to Fond du Lac and took a machinist course. He then went back to work for the Soo Line. The couple moved to Thief River Falls in 1954 and Delwin was a machinist for the Soo Line Railroad, retiring on May 9, 1984.
Delwin was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, Golden Kiwanis, International Association of Machinists, and served on committees at St. Bernard Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Soo Line Credit Union Board, American Legion and V. F. W. of Thief River Falls. He enjoyed building things, remodeling his house, yard work, playing cards, baseball, biking, softball and square dancing.
Delwin is survived by his wife, Joan of Thief River Falls, MN; two children: Sandra Ann Schob of Fargo, ND and Delwin (Patricia) Schob of Thief River Falls, MN; four grandchildren: Dawn (James) Webster of San Jose, CA, Tanya (Timothy) Loe and Cheryl Schob, all of Thief River Falls, MN and Jennifer (Kirk) Thorson of Minot, ND; two great grandchildren: Grace Webster and William Thorson; and four foster children: Mary, Julie, Marge and Betty, 2 sisters in law: Joanne Schob, Fond u Lac, WI; Primrose Schindelholtz, Fon du Lac, WI, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents; one son, James; infant son, Gregory; infant daughter, Barbara; three brothers: Dale, Elwood, and Ellsworth; and two sisters: Dorothy Oldenburg and Lorraine Bartelt.
