Doloris Haugen, 88 of Oklee, MN passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND with her loving family by her side.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church rural Oklee, MN with Rev. Jonathan Dodson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Doloris Ona (Solberg) Haugen was born to Adolph and Selma (Nelson) Solberg in Pennington County, MN on November 24, 1933. She was raised on the family farm in Mayfield Township, was baptized into the Christian faith and was confirmed at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, rural Oklee, MN. She attended country school and went on to graduate from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1950. She obtained a Normal School teaching certificate and began to teach country school at Highlanding School at the age of 17. She also taught at Wyandotte Country school.
She met the love of her life, Marlyn Haugen, in high school and they were married on July 14, 1956 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. Doloris and Marlyn lived all but a few years of their married life on Doloris' home farm. Shortly after they were married, Marlyn was drafted into the army and the couple moved to the military base, Ft. Gordon, Augusta, Georgia. In Georgia, Doloris and Marlyn welcomed two sons, Vance and Monte. After completing Marlyn's military time in Georgia they moved back to the farm north of Oklee and have lived there since.
Doloris completed her bachelor's degree in teaching from Moorhead State Teacher's College, now Minnesota State University in Moorhead. She spent many long hours taking summer courses and correspondence courses while raising their young family. Marlyn and Doloris added two daughters to the family, Deone and Amy. Because of the difference in the children's ages Doloris would say she was lucky she got to raise two families, her boys, and her girls.
She continued her teaching career in Thief River Falls, MN, where she taught children with learning disabilities. While she loved all her students, those who captured her heart the most were the ones who needed extra help to succeed. She continued working in special education at Oklee Public Schools and coordinated the reading program and eventually moved to teaching fifth grade. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women teachers. She retired after more than 45 years of teaching in 1999.
She was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, rural Oklee, since childhood. Her faith in the Lord was strong and present in everything she did. She was a member of the Women of the ELCA, led and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She served on the church council and poured her heart into her church - even shortening their honeymoon so she and Marlyn could be present for Ebenezer's 50 th Anniversary Celebration which she had helped plan.
Doloris touched hundreds of lives through the children she taught. She called them all "her kids." She loved and respected each one and believed anyone had the ability to learn.
Doloris is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Marlyn.
She is also survived by her children: Vance (Bonnie) Haugen, Canton, MN; Monte (Sue) Haugen, Oklee, MN; Deone (husband, Mark Concannon) Merkel, Moorhead, MN; and Amy (Sean) Kelly, Moorhead, MN;
