Obituary

Donald J. Boutain, age 87, of Red Lake Falls, MN died peacefully on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 18th at 11 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bill DeCrans officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior at the church. A luncheon in the church hall will follow immediately after the service. Interment will be at St. Dorothy's Catholic Cemetery, Dorothy, MN. Donald J. Boutain was born October 10, 1926 in Dorothy, Minnesota to Annie (Benoit) and Joseph Boutain, Don as he was known to family and friends, lived his entire life in Red Lake County and was especially proud of his French Canadian ancestors who pioneered the area. He could trace ancestry on both sides of his family to the earliest Canadian settlements and delighted in learning about his family history. Donald attended high school and was graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture, Crookston MN in 1943, completing an Advanced year in 1944. Don was an accomplished wrestler for the Aggies, proud of his record of never being pinned. He later obtained a certificate degree in accounting from the Area Vocational Technical School in 1969. Don married Alice M. Starken in 1946 and celebrated 64 years together on the farm they owned and operated near Dorothy, before her death in 2010. They had seven children, Lynn, James (deceased 2003) Kathy Jo, (deceased 1951) Karin, Connie, David, and Mary. Don faithfully practiced his Catholic faith throughout his life and was active in his home parish of St. Dorothy's as trustee, treasurer, and administrator of the cemetery. He remained a strong supporter of education serving on the Board of Education for Franklin School in Dorothy and 12 years on the Board of ISD #630 in Red Lake Falls. He was also a member of the Louisville Township board and Office of Economic Opportunity advisory board. Donald was appreciated for his fairness and respect for the people he served. He is remembered by his family and friends as a generous man who readily shared his possessions; especially the abundance of his garden. He enjoyed landscaping and caring for the trees and flowers he and Alice planted. Don was an avid bird watcher who chronicled the birds that visited and nested in their yard. He is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one sister, Jo Ann Sirek. He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, children James and Kathy Jo, and one sister, Marlys Schmitz.
