Donald M. Mack, 85, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Northwest Medical Center, CNC Unit, Thief River Falls, MN.
Donald Mathieu Mack and twin brother, Daniel, was born March 9, 1919 on the homestead in McKinzie County, ND, the son of Earl Francis and Mabel (Mathieu) Mack.
On December 22, 1941, Donald was united into marriage to Jennie Akin.
Donald entered the United States Army, during World War II, May 19, 1942 and was Honorably Discharged June 26, 1945. He participated in battles and campaigns in Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Appennines, Mediterranean Theater, North African Theater and Po Valley. He served in the Medical Detachment Infantry Regiment. During action from March to April 1943, in Tunisia, North Africa, Pvt. Mack, with utter disregard for his own safety, left cover of his fox-hole and went forward to aid two of his wounded comrades. While administering first aid to the soldiers, the enemy laid down a heavy barrage of mortar fire wounding Pvt. Mack. In spite of being wounded he continued to administer first aid and care for the wounded. His outstanding bravery and devotion to duty in the face of danger were exemplary and reflect credit upon the Armed Forces of the United States. Donald received a Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal, European Campaign Ribbon and a Distinguished Service Ribbon
Following his discharge, Donald returned to Goodridge, MN, where he began farming in Mayfield Township and worked at various jobs. He married Emma Olson in 1995. He retired from farming, February 2002.
Survived by wife, Emma Mack, Oklee, MN; sons, Donald E. (Esther), Warroad, MN, Gerald D. (Maureen), Elk River, MN, Keith A. (Elaine), Oklee, MN, daughter, Wanda (Peter) Miller, Moorhead, MN; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Nellie (Marion) Anson, Bremerton, WA; various nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by wife, Jennie Mack, July of 1994; son, Larry, daughter, Sharon; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
