Donald E. Verbout, 79, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Life Care Medical Center, Roseau, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 2, 2010 at St. Clement Catholic Church, Grygla, MN with Father Kleinwachter presiding. Burial will be at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Grygla American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 5 " 8 PM, Thursday, July 1, 2010 at St. Clements Church, Grygla, with a prayer service at 7 PM and also for one hour prior to the funeral, Friday.
Donald E Verbout was born on April 15, 1931 at home in Argyle, MN the fourth of ten children of Hippolet and Margaret (Hill) Verbout. He was baptized and confirmed into the catholic faith. Donald attended schools at Fourtown and Spruce Grove of Beltrami County, and also Grygla School. In the winter he went to school with horse and sleigh; and as a child their home burned when they went to a School Christmas program.
Donald started work at Grygla Co-Op Store in Grygla in the spring of 1950. On May 19, 1950 at the age of 19 he enlisted into service with the United States Army. Donald was Honorably Discharged on May 18, 1955.
On August 7, 1954, Donald was united in marriage to Angeline Polansky at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Middle River, MN, and that same year they moved to Olympia, WA. In 1955 following his Honorable Discharge, the couple returned to Grygla, MN where they bought a home in town, and Donald continued working at the Grygla Co-Op Store for the next 39 years. He later went to work at Marvin Window in Warroad until 2003 when he retired.
Donald was the first trustee at St. Clements Catholic Church in Grygla, MN. He served on the church council, and also served as care taker, Eucharist minister and usher for many years. Donald served on the Grygla City Council and Grygla Fire Department. He was a substitute janitor at the Grygla School and also worked for Land-O-Lakes Turkey Plant during his two week summer vacations.
The couple bought a farm in 1971 where they built a new home and enjoyed farming. Through the years, Donald enjoyed hunting with his sons, Donavon and Dale, and three little brothers, Rolland, Wayne and Lynn. He also enjoyed mowing lawn, gardening, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Angeline of Grygla; children, Naomi (Leon) Johnson of Goodridge, MN, Linda (Timothy) Hermanson of Rush City, MN, Dale (Sherry) Verbout of Roseau, MN and Lisa Verbout of Moorhead, MN; daughter-in-law, Shirley (Bruce) Wegley of Goodridge, MN; grandchildren, Kristy (Tyson) Treat, Dominick (Minde) Hermanson, Jenny Johnson, Gabriel (Tenille) Hermanson, Chad (Jennifer) Johnson, Jasmine Verbout, Madison Verbout and Alexander Verbout; great grandchildren, Ryker Treat, Anthony Hermanson, Hunter Hermanson, Carter Hermanson, Tayler Treat, Clayton Johnson and Caden Hermanson. Brothers and sisters, Robert (Mary Ann) Verbout of Grygla, Eileen Miller of Moorhead, Melvin (Irene) Verbout of Fargo, ND, Grace (Ralph) Rundell of Grygla, Deloris (Conrad) Greicar of Deer Creek, CO, Betty (Robert) Willits of Moorhead, Wayne (Marie Ann) Verbout of Grygla; sister-in-law, Phyllis Verbout of Thief River Falls. Donald is also survived by 17 Godchildren and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Donavon as the result of a car accident on June 16, 1980; parents; brothers, Rolland (Shirley) and Lynn; brother-in-law, Harold Miller; mother and father-in-law, George and Mary Polansky; niece, Pamela Miller; great niece, Madilyn Ramsett; and great nephew, Brandon Olson.
