Doris Runger of Thief River Falls, MN, age 95, died peacefully Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Tri County Hospital, Wadena, MN. Funeral service will be Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM in Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Ale Tulu and Reverend John Golv Officiating. Burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 5 - 8 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls and also one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. Doris Edell Olson Runger was born to Andrew and Sophia (Green) Olson on October 10, 1919 in Warroad, MN. She was the ninth of thirteen Children. Doris was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad, MN. She attended school in Warroad. On May 15, 1938 Doris was united in marriage to Larry Runger at Warroad, MN. During the early years they made their home in Warroad. Doris and Larry lived most of their married life in Thief River Falls. They were dedicated parents to their two children. Doris was a stay at home mom for many years. While in her early 40's Doris pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She went back to school and became an LPN. Doris worked her entire career at the Hospital and clinic in Thief River Falls. Doris lived out her Christian faith in dedication to always putting others before self. Her family and friends were very important to her. Doris was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church where she served in many ways over the years. She was a frequent visitor to Zion Members at Valley Home where she delivered bulletins, newsletters and birthday carnations. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and Sons of Norway. Doris was probably the most happy when she was in her kitchen cooking and baking for those she loved. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and a very patriotic citizen. Doris loved sports and watched Larry who was a lefty pitcher, lead his team to many victories. She followed her son's many sports activities. Doris was a very devoted MN Twins and Wild fan. When she was 90 years of age Doris moved from her home to Greenleaf Assisted Living. Doris loved the cookie tray and endless cups of coffee in the dining room. In 2013 Doris moved to Fair Oaks Lodge Nursing Home in Wadena, MN. She enjoyed sitting on her "perch" (love seat) by the front door where she greeted people with her friendly smile as they came and went. During her 95 years of life Doris witnessed some of the world's largest events, from surviving the Great Depression to sending six brothers off to serve their country in WWII, from the early days of the automobile to seeing her son become a fighter pilot to today's modern technology. Through all these changes Doris remained the same steady committed person always looking to serve others before herself. Doris will be forever missed by her family, she is survived by her daughter Donna (Bob) Grendahl of Wadena, MN, son Ron (Lara) Runger of Prescott, AZ; grandchildren Rene'(Barry) Lindbo of Redwood Falls, MN, Robby (Lori) Grendahl of Wadena, MN, Jennifer (Connie) Runger Flusche' of Peoria, AZ, Benjamin (Samantha) Runger of Flagstaff, AZ; great-grandchildren Thomas and Matthew Lindbo, Ryan and Mari Grendahl, Jonathan, Nicholas and Andrew Runger Flusche'. She is also survived by sister Mavis Hoenke of Hallock, MN; sisters-in-law Dorothy Olson of Warroad, MN, Connie Olson of Gresham, OR and Helen Lund of Bend, OR along with many nieces, nephews and her many friends. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Larry, parents Andrew and Sophia, brothers Albert, Helmer, Edwin, Melvin, Lisle, Lornie and Leslie and sisters Clara Bolton, Alvilda Caulk, Alyce Mattson and Helen Sandstrom.
