Obituary

Douglas H. Stewart, 85, died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 7, 2003 " 10:30 AM at United Methodist Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Dan Horn officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Visitation will be 5 " 8 PM, Tuesday, May 6, 2003 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Johnson-Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls and one hour prior to the service in the church on Wednesday.

Douglas Hamilton Stewart was born on June 14, 1917 in Gilby, North Dakota the son of George F. and Pearl (McKechnie) Stewart. He was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Gilby. After graduating from Gilby High School, Doug attended the University of North Dakota graduating in 1940 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering.

On August 2, 1940 he was united in marriage to Lillian Wools in Minneapolis. Prior to World War II, he worked for the Great Northern Railroad and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. The couple moved to California, where Doug designed and built munitions plants with the Kaiser Engineers during World War II. Doug and Lillian then moved to Grand Forks where he worked for Lium and Burdick Engineers, designing Thief River Falls new water treatment plant in 1945-1946. He was hired as Thief River Falls City Engineer in 1946, where he worked until 1952 when he started his own consulting engineering firm, D.H. Stewart and Associates, with offices in Thief River Falls and Grand Rapids, MN. In 1960, the name of the firm was changed to Stewart and Walker, Inc. with offices in Thief River Falls and Bemidji. Doug sold his interest in the firm to his partner and retired in December of 1979. Doug and Lillian spent winters in their home in Naples, FL and the balance of the year in Thief River Falls, until Doug suffered a debilitating stroke in February 1999.

Doug enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Thief River Golf Club, Elks, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, President of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers, Director of the National Society of Professional Engineers. In 1969, he was nominated by his employees and was honored by the Thief River Falls Jaycees as Boss of the Year .

He is survived by his wife Lillian Susie Stewart, Thief River Falls, sons Donald (Sheron) Stewart, Thief River Falls, John (Bonnie) Stewart, Eagan, MN, Scott Stewart, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Collen (Mike) Elftman, Carver, MN, Todd (Jennifer) Stewart, Eagan, MN, Melanie Stewart, Minneapolis, MN, Natasha Stewart, Phoenix, AZ, Breanna Stewart, Phoenix, AZ and great grandchildren Kayla Elftman, Carver, MN and Alia Stewart, Eagan, MN. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Margaret and brother Boyd.
