Obituary

Edward Lynn Keifenheim, age 99, died peacefully at Inver Glen Senior Living in Inver Grove Heights, MN on May 13, 2017.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 26, 2017 at St Joseph Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner Officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Red Lake Falls, MN.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday at the church.

Edward Lynn Keifenheim was born in Red Lake Falls to Edward and Edna (Gray) Keifenheim on June 8, 1917. Lynn graduated from Lafayette High School in 1935. Lynn worked at his father's grocery store, served one year in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington, and for the U.S. Postal Service prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. Lynn completed Officer Candidate School in 1942 and served as a captain in the South Pacific in Hawaii, Kwajalein, and Enewetak during World War II and received a bronze star.

Lynn married Marion Gerardy in Plummer on April 12, 1945. Lynn and Marion lived in Fort Bliss,TX and Fort Leavenworth, KS before Lynn separated to the Army Reserve and returned to Red Lake Falls in 1946. Lynn returned to work at the post office in Red Lake Falls as a clerk from 1946-59 and as a rural mail carrier from 1959-78. Lynn continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1946-59, during which time he received a promotion to major, and in the Minnesota National Guard from 1959-64.

Lynn was active and provided leadership in many organizations in Red Lake Falls. He served as Commander of Gunder Austad American Legion Post 22 in 1948; Chairman of the 9th District Legion Conventions in 1949 and 1976; Park Board member and President from 1964-69, during which time the Cardin-Hunt arena was completed; President and Secretary-treasurer of the Sportsmen's Club; President and Board member of the Oak Knolls Golf Club for 3 years; Chairman of the centennial celebration in 1976; and Board member and President of the St. John's Hospital Board. Lynn was honored by the Red Lake Falls Civic and Commerce Association in 1985 as "Man of the Year". In addition, Lynn led the color guard in Red Lake County's observance of Memorial Day for many years.

Following retirement from the post office Lynn and Marion spent 23 winters in Mesa, AZ. They travelled to Europe, Hawaii, and Alaska. Marion died in 2003 and Lynn married Geraldine Nance on April 9, 2005.  Lynn played amateur baseball when he was younger and he was an avid outdoorsman and golfer. Among his accomplishments was shooting his age when he was in his 70's. Lynn continued with deer and duck hunting until age 90. Lynn continued his generosity during his retirement by frequently helping neighbors and friends with repair projects.

Lynn is preceded in death by his wife, Marion, second wife, Geraldine, his parents, brothers, William and Donald, and sisters, Shirley Walach and Marjorie Sullivan.

Lynn is survived by his 6 children who all live in Minnesota: James (Linda), Minneapolis, Gary (Mary), Elk River, Carole Hennig (Volker), White Bear Lake, Patrice Katzenmaier (James), West St. Paul, Bruce (Martha), East Grand Forks, Charles (Dana), Buffalo, 15 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Lynn will be remembered by the many people he touched, especially his children and their families.
