He was the fifth of six children born to Bergit Hemmestveit Langlie and Olaf Lauglid Langlie. He graduated from Pershing HS in Plummer in 1937. He first worked at odd jobs doing farming or mechanical work. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp and National Youth Association in Minnesota. Ed and some friends traveled to work in Washington where they had heard there was a need for apple pickers. Ed served in the 42nd engineers of the US Army from 1941-1945. He repaired heavy machinery and built airstrips from Juneau, Alaska, to Attu (in the Aleutian islands), and finished in Okinawa. Ed attended the University of Minnesota, then returned to northern Minnesota to work as an electrician. He and Ardith Knight married April 22, 1951, at the United Methodist Church in TRF, where they remained members until their deaths. Together they started Langlie Lectric, an electrical contracting business. Many of the buildings in TRF and surrounding area, including the Methodist Church, have electrical systems installed by Langlie Lectric. He enjoyed farming his hobby farm in Plummer. He retired in 1988, but continued to service calls from his loyal customers. He was never one to sit idle. Ed and Arcith raised four girls and celebrated sixty years of wedded bliss. They enjoyed traveling the world together, making trips to Africa, South America, Norway, Hawaii and across much of the US and Canada. The annual family fishing trip to Nestor Falls, Ontario, to his brother's Arrowhead resort created many treasured memories. Later, Ed and Ardith traveled to visit their children in Victoria, BC, Canada; Reno, NV; and Wuerzburg, Germany. Ed was active in his community as a lifelong member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV, and was the treasurer of Kiwanis for many years. He also was a member of the Minnesota Electrical Association, serving as state president.
