Obituary

Eldon Lincoln Thompson

On Abe Lincoln's Birthday in 1928, a baby boy was born to Floyd and Floretta Thompson.  So to begin the family tradition of naming their children after current events, he was named Eldon Lincoln Thompson.  Eldon was to be one of 18 children to this couple.

As we know, the 30's were hard times, and a very difficult time for parents to raise a family.   As the oldest, many responsibilities fell on Eldon to keep up the farm, care for the animals, and help watch over of his siblings.  This hard work attitude and caring for others was seeded deep at that time, and remained with him for his lifetime.

When old enough to join, Eldon began his 20 year career in the military.  He experienced World War II, Korean, and Viet Nam wars. Because of this dedication to his country, it took him away from his spouse and family.  Even though the marriages didn't work out, they remained friends, and Eldon gave 6 children his Thompson name.

Once retired from Military life, he settled down on the farm in Park River, ND.  Here he became an entrepreneur of salvage…and Thompson Salvage was born.  His biggest challenge and enjoyment was getting that best deal at an auction.  By going to an auction with him, you quickly learned the secrets of bidding…eye ball the crowd real good as to who you are up against, never talk with your hands or you'll end up taking something home you don't want, and of course, bidding up something you really don't want, but don't want it to go too cheap.

Because of his children, the grandchildren started to come.  With every new addition to his family, the sparkle in his eyes would get brighter with each birth.  Some of the grandson's were blessed with summertime work with their grandpa.  They learned powerful lessons of hard work, and how to "get the lead out".  He shared with them that he didn't worry about dying.  He told them that God has a plan, and when he turned the page in his book and if your name was on it, it was your day.  If it wasn't, you lived to see another day.  His page finally came as he must have done everything God needed him to do.  He also stressed that if you know what something is worth, don't settle for less.  And, a half ton pickup will haul a ton.

In 1990, Eldon left the Park River farm and moved to Thief River Falls, MN, to be with his new bride, Margaret, and live out the rest of his life.  Together they enjoyed their farm life and yard work, traveled when they could, and of course, Eldon continued to sneak in an auction or two.  Eldon spoke highly of his new community of friends, his church, and his new addition of more children and grandchildren.

On 11-15-19, Eldon left many loved ones behind, but was welcomed with open arms by those that preceded him.  We will hold our memories close to our hearts, and will retell our stories over and over when our families gather, and as new generations are added.

A Celebration of Life will be held in May on the family farm in Park River, ND.  This will allow for our wide spread family, and friends, to arrange plans to be there.
