A. Ellsworth Jorgenson of Thief River Falls, MN, 93, died Friday, March 21, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Ale Tulu and Rev. John Golv officiating. Burial will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 5:30 PM prayer service led by Rev. Terri Cuppett on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls. Arnold Ellsworth Jorgenson was born September 13, 1920 in Fairview Hospital, Minneapolis, MN, the son of Ole J. and Clara (Flatland) Jorgenson. He was baptized in Minneapolis and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls. He attended school and graduated from Lincoln High School, Thief River Falls. Ellsworth served his country in the United States Air Force as a radio operator with the 316th Troop Carrier squadron. He flew missions every day, mostly to the continent carrying supplies of every kind and returning wounded back to hospitals or soldiers released from German prison camps. Some of his missions were to northern and southern France and the Rhine Crossing. His last weeks in the service, he spent every day hauling 5 gallon gas cans to keep General Patton going in his march across Germany and then was sent to France to the 55b troop Carrier. After the war he wound up on a Liberty Ship heading for South America by way of Trinidad. At the ATC base in Balen, Brazil he was reassigned and became a link trainer instructor for the three bases in South America where planes landed on the way to the States. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Ellsworth was proud to serve his country and thankful to God to have spared him. On August 9, 1947, Ellsworth was united in marriage to Octavia Serena Elaine Larson at Clara Lutheran Church. He was employed at Hillard/Mostue Grocery, Mostue Florist and Consumer's Co-op in Thief River Falls and for 28 years, served as the Pennington County Treasurer, Thief River Falls. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, where he served 14 years on the church board as secretary. Ellsworth was a Life member of the Thief River Falls Lions Club, where he served in various capacities, both locally and in the district from 1960 until the present; including a term as District Governor from 1979-1980. He was inducted to the Lions MD5M Hall of Fame and has received their Progressive Melvin Jones and Helen Keller Awards. He was a Life member of the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post #117, where he served as Treasurer and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Vice Commander and was Commander of the Post from 1957-58, was Post Chaplin for 4 years and on the Board of Directors for 6 years. He was part of and still active in the original Committee, which 40 years ago, organized the color Guard which they offer military rites to all veterans in Pennington County. He was selected Senior Citizen of the year 2000 in Pennington County and served 18 years as Civil Defense Director, Pennington County, assistant Cub Master 3 years, President Northern Blood Bank 1 year and President of PTA and PTA Councils of School District 564. He enjoyed wood-working, photography, camping and traveling, in which he has visited all 50 states. Ellsworth loved his country, he loved his community and most of all he loved his family. He is survived by wife Octavia Jorgenson, Thief River Falls; sons, Daniel Jorgenson, Las Vegas, NV and Thomas Jorgenson, Thief River Falls, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
