Evelyn Johanneck, 91, of Red Lake Falls, died August 26, 2009 at Hillcrest Senior Living Center in Red Lake Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 PM, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at St. Joseph Church, Red Lake Falls with Father Chuck Huck presiding. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Red Lake Falls, MN.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church, Saturday.
She was born May 7, 1918 in Red Lake Falls Township, Red Lake County the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Zins) Johanneck. She attended Busy Bee grade school and graduated from Lafayette High School.
In 1929, she moved with parents and family to Almena and Turtle Lake, Wis. where they made their home for more than 4 ½ years coming back to Red Lake Falls in 1934 where she has lived for the most part since.
After her graduation she was a member of a small dance orchestra and was employed as a bookkeeper at a gas station on the north side.
During World War II she was employed at the Hanford Washington Atomic Plant as a teletype operator in the Communication Dept.. While there she had the opportunity to see several of the scientists who were the masterminds of the highly secretive project which wasnt made known to all the workers there until after the first bomb was dropped on Aug 6, 1945. Because of illness, she returned to Red Lake Falls and helped on the family farm in Browns Creek Township for 30 years. While there she was active in the NFO (National Farmers Organization) and was publicity chairperson and commodity coordinator for several years. After the sale of the family farm she retired to Gervais Township.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Hillcrest Auxiliary - St. Annes Society and assisted with blood drives in Red Lake Falls for many years. Her favorite pastimes included traveling and family and community history.
She is survived by sister Francis Marcotte, Red Lake Falls and brother John of Crivitz, Wis. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers Edward, Raymond, Sylvester and Clement, sisters Gertrude Schaefer Molitor, Eleanor Dufault McBride, Agnes Fecteau and Leona Boughton, nephews Robert Boughton, Willard Marcotte, Guy Schaefer, nieces Irene Schaefer, Barbara Johanneck, Murial Dufault Ebersol, Arlene Dufault Boley, Marion Johanneck, Beth Boughton and Carol Dufault Cornelious and three great nephews, Peter Schnieder, David Audette, and Andy Harmeyer.
