Obituary

Frank Womack, age 91, formerly of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the Karlstad Memorial Healthcare Center in Karlstad, MN. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday October 1, 2014 at 2PM at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN, with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial will be at Fort Snelling, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorials preferred to Cancer Research or University of Minnesota. Francis "Frank" Kenton Womack was born September 24, 1922 at St. Paul, MN, the son of John Tignal and May Elizabeth Kenton (Atkinson) Womack. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Augustine Catholic Church, South St. Paul, MN. He grew up and attended Central Grade School, Junior High School and High School in South St. Paul, MN, graduating in 1939. Frank served in the United States Air Force, from July 13, 1942 until his honorable discharge as a propeller specialist, November 17, 1945. He attended college at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1949, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science. Frank was employed for Swift and Company in South St. Paul. He then began working as an Administrative Assistant at Rosemount, MN in the aero-lab for the University of Minnesota for 5 years. He also worked for 1½ years, as a buyer for Powers Department store, Minneapolis, MN. Frank moved to Port Hueneme, CA, teaching 6th grade for 6 years and teaching 3rd and 4th grade for one year at the Academy of St. Catherine, Ventura, CA. In 1964, he moved to Thief River Falls to begin his teaching career. He taught 3 years at Mark Twain School, was principal at Mark Twain and Knox for 2 years, then to Washington School, where he taught upper elementary grades until he retired in March of 1984. Frank was active in the arts of Thief River Falls and Chameleon Theatre Group acting in plays such as "Tender Trap", "You Can't Take It With You", "Romanoff and Juliet", Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "You Know I Can't Hear You When The Waters Running", "Harvey", "Scrooge", "Generation", "Look Homeward Angel", "Love Rides The Rails" and also was director of several plays. He played a mean game of cribbage and was a keen observer of life offering opinions on many topics with a gruff sense of humor. He held membership with Thief River Falls American Legion, the VFW, Golden Pioneers, Elks and was active in the Heritage Center work and Skylite Apartments. He is survived by step-sister, Barbara Houser, Oxnard, CA; niece and nephews, Mary (Paul) Odden, Burnsville, MN, Robert Womack, Yonkers, NY and John Womack, Winter Springs FL; grand nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by parents, sisters, Margaret and Katherine, brother, J.J., step-mother, Margaret and step- sister, Rachel Vuyovich.
