George Sodon, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 24, 2025, at his residence in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 22, 1941, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Edward and Lavinia "Violet" Sodon.
George's early life was marked by dedication and service, as he honorably served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962. After his military service, he graduated from Vocational Technical School in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His career spanned several roles, including serving as a heavy equipment operator and over-the-road truck driver. He also managed transportation for the Red Lake Falls and Thief River Falls school districts, and was a small business owner, demonstrating his ability to wear many hats throughout his working life.
On June 24, 1967, George married Ruth Nofsinger in Marion, Indiana. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and companionship as they moved from New Jersey to Indiana, Arkansas, and finally settled in Minnesota, where they spent many joyous years together.
A man of strong opinions and deep convictions, George was known for his spontaneous spirit, unwavering faith, and patriotic pride. He carried a generous heart and was selfless in sharing his blessings with those he loved. Those who knew him will fondly remember him as a fierce defender of his family and friends.
Alongside his professional endeavors, George found great joy in hobbies that centered around the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, relishing every opportunity to enjoy nature. Garage sales, collecting, auctions, and leisurely drives with Ruth were among the cherished activities that enriched his life.
George took immense pride in his family, considering his children and grandchildren to be his proudest accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children Derek (Michele), Bonnie (Kevin), and Warren (Tracy); grandchildren Katelyn, Lance, Ashley, Dianna, Kirsten, Cody, Travis, Kalicia, McKaylah, Steven, and Seth; as well as great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Scarlett, and Margot.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lavinia; siblings Edward, Robert, James, Donald, William, and Roy; sisters Joan and Betty; and children Douglas and Rebecca.
A visitation will be held at the Evangelical Free Church in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, on January 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Kent Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Black River Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Thief River Falls, MN.
George Sodon will be remembered for his remarkable life, his loving spirit, and the indelible impact he made on all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy will continue to live on through his family, who will carry forward the values and lessons he imparted throughout his life.
