Gertie Elg of Thief River Falls, MN, formerly Goodridge, MN age 95, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge, MN with Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Burial will be held at Star Cemetery, Star Township, Pennington County, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral at Faith Lutheran Church. Gertie Sjulestad was born on the family farm in Star Township on February 1, 1919 the daughter of Even and Ingeborg (Dale) Sjulestad. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Gertie attended country school through the eighth grade intending to go to high school in Thief River Falls; however, her mother died and Gertie had to assume the household duties. She saw her future husband, Carl Elg, who was visiting her dad on the farm. When she saw Carlie's dimples Gertie decided she wanted to marry him, and she did. On October 26, 1939 the couple was united in marriage and was blessed with six children. They lived in Bemidji, MN for two years and then moved to Erie, MN where they operated the Erie Store. In 1946 they moved to Goodridge, MN where Gertie was a housewife, enjoying gardening, embroidery and her family. She was also an excellent cook. Carlie owned and operated Elg's Garage. In her later years, Gertie worked at Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls for about three years. Gertie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge, MN and in her younger years was active in the ladies aid. Survivors include her loving children, Marlene (Dick) Lamoureaux of Redding, CA, Karen Siegfried of Duluth, MN, Lee (Sharon) Elg of Sauk Rapids, MN, Carol Weichert of St. Cloud, MN, Audrey (Charles) Russell of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren, Mark (Yelena) Herrin, Carla (Paul) Meneghini, Charles (Elisabeth) Dablow, Rob Bourgeois, Tanya Alvarez, Joel Bourgeois; great-grandchildren, Sasha Herrin, Charlotte, Kasey & Carson Meneghini, Amber, Jake & Noah Bourgeois, Lindsay & Danielle Hall, Ashley & Aaron Alvarez; great-great grandson, William Hall; great-great granddaughter, Ivy Hall; sister-in-law, Bonnie Sjulestad; and many other nieces and nephews. Gertie is preceded in death by her husband, Carlie on May 15, 1999; parents; daughter, Gladys (Joe) Bourgeois; grandson, Todd Herrin; sister, Signe (Morris) Miller; brothers, Gerald (Rose) Sjulestad, Swen Sjulestad, Edwin (Marian) Sjulestad & Robert (Irene) Sjulestad.
