Obituary

Guro Gertie Nesland was born July 15, 1913 at Grygla, MN, the daughter of Mikkel and Gunda (Roisland) Nesland. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, rural Grygla, Minnesota. Gertie attended Fairview School, Beltrami County, Minnesota. Upon leaving school she worked in the community for several years.

On December 9, 1935, Gertie was united in marriage to Sam Haugen at the Lutheran parsonage in Mavie, MN. They farmed in rural Goodridge where they raised their 4 children. Gertie was an able partner helping with the care and tending of the livestock and poultry as well as operating some of the farm machinery. She was a resourceful, capable homemaker with special cooking and baking skills. She was a good gardener and enjoyed sharing the produce with others. She was also a talented seamstress. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. When their children were grown, Gertie took a position with the dietary staff at the Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls, Minnesota where she worked for several years.

Gertie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, former president and treasurer of WELCA and Telemarken Lutheran Women. She was an active member of the Goodridge Senior Citizens group. Gertie was also a member of Retired Senior Volunteer Program, receiving several awards for the miles she drove providing rides for others.

Survived by children, Gene (Elaine) Haugen, Maple Valley, WA, Dorothy Dyrseth, Sauk Centre, MN, Anne (Douglas) Keim, North Oaks, MN, Milton (Corrine) Haugen, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren, Sam Haugen, Eric Baker, Vincent Baker, Sonja Kruger, Sarah Kluempke, Stephen Keim, Michael Keim, Amy Foley, and Mark Haugen; greatgrandchildren, Sean Baker, Colin and Kyle Baker, Kiersten and Maria Kruger; sisters, Tillie Askeland, Theresa Blaine, and Gunhild Bunny DuChamp; brothers, Ole and Knute (Stella) Nesland.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam; parents; sister, Julia Clausen; brothers, Torkel and Targie Nesland; brothers-in-law, Orville Askeland, Alvin Blaine, and Jesse DuChamp, and son-in-law Gerald Dyrseth.

Memorials preferred to Faith Lutheran Church, Goodridge; Valley Home, Thief River Falls; or Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.
