Gilbert Genereux of Brooks, MN passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks with Father Adam Hamness Officiating. Burial will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Brooks MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

Gilbert Larry Genereux was born April 29, 1932 at Terrebonne, MN son of Harmidas and Agnes (Derosier) Genereux. He attended school in Plummer, MN graduating in 1951.

On September 23, 1953 Gilbert was drafted into the Korean Conflict and served in the US Army, stationed in Fort Benning, GA. He was honorable discharged on September 22, 1955. Following his discharge he returned to the family farm 4 miles west of Brooks.

On September 7, 1957 he was united in marriage to RoseMarie Sabourin at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks. The couple lived on the family farm where they raised their four children Mark, Peggy, Allan and Dale. In 1979 they sold the farm and built a home in Brooks and purchased the Cozy Bar. In 1983 he moved to Littleton, CO where he lived until returning to Thief River Falls in 2001. In 2013 Gilbert moved back to his hometown of Brooks where he has since resided.

Gilbert was a member of the Plummer American legion, Poplar River Township board, Farmers Union Board of Directors and the St. Joseph Catholic Church board. He loved to garden, passing around the produce to his family and neighbors.

Gilbert is survived by his children Mark (Peggy) Genereux of Warroad, MN, Peggy (Tim) Hoefer of Red Lake Falls, MN, Allan (Kristie) Genereux of Bemidji, MN and Dale Genereux of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren Andrew (Christen) Genereux, Pamela Genereux, Adam (Kimberly) Genereux, Paul Hoefer, Stacy (Buckly) Cota, Michelle (Derek) Juhl, Anna (Adam) Sorenson, Erin (Travis) Haman, Christopher (Kelsey) Genereux and Michael Genereux: great-grandchildren Nathan, Daina, Emma, Gracie, Brielle, Addison, Alexis, Gretchen, Miley, Chase, Matthew, Zachary, Adelaide, Briar, and Savannah. Mother of Gilberts children RoseMarie Jolly of Erskine, MN; sisters Louella Liychik of Coon Rapids, MN, Marcella (Pete) Kaiser of Centennial, CO, Yvonne Nelson of Grand Forks, ND, Arlene Paxton of Las Vegas, NV, Carolyn (Larry) Donahue of Katy, TX and Janice (Ronnie) Fortier of Grand Forks, ND along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Gloria, brothers-in-law Mike Liychik and Ivan Nelson.
