Gladys Sophie Johnson was born on November 21, 1914 on the family farm in Viking Township, Marshall County, MN, the daughter of Carl Oscar and Helen (Samuelson) Johnson. She was baptized in Viking at Zion Lutheran Church. Gladys attended Ridgeview Country School through 8th grade. Her mother passed away when she was 18, and she continued to live and work on the farm with her father and brothers. Gladys was united in marriage to Arthur Stromberg on May 19, 1941 in Warren, MN. The couple raised two children: Darwin and Darlene. Their family made their home on the Johnson Farm in Viking where they continued to live, and raise dairy cattle, poultry, and farm small grains. She and Art moved to Newfolden in 1972. After Art's death in 1986, Gladys resided at their home until December of 2011 when she moved to the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls. Gladys was a member of Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden. Over the years, she enjoyed visiting with her family, friends, and relatives and listening to the "Trumpet of Truth" on the local radio station. As Gladys grew older, she continued to visit by telephone. Even after moving off the farm, her favorite pastime was her interest in farming. She rented out and oversaw all the farming activities that took place on her land. Gladys kept a watchful eye on everything that was planted and harvested up until her death. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Darlene Gonshorowski of Newfolden MN; granddaughters, Tami (Joel) Swan of Newfolden, MN, and Stacey Moll of Canton, GA, and LaNette (Danny) Osbjornson of Glyndon, MN; great-grandchildren, Garrett (fiancé, Beth Tharaldson) Swan of Newfolden, MN, Kacie (Matt) Preysz of Powder Springs, GA, Jordan Moll of St. Cloud, MN, and Zachary, Ashley, and Jacob Osbjornson of Glyndon, MN; several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Art; son, Darwin Knutson; and four brothers, Claus, Randolph, Harry, and Walmer Johnson.
