Gregory Walter Holmes, 68, of Plummer, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Gregory was born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, on June 13, 1957, to Roy Walter Holmes and Vivian Mavis (Lien) Holmes. He grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1975, and went on to further his education and received his aircraft mechanic and pilot licenses.
Greg later met and married Nancy, and together they welcomed their daughter, Danielle. Being Danielle’s dad was one of the greatest joys of his life, and their bond remained strong throughout the years. He enjoyed spending time with family and cruising around in his walker hoverboard/chair scooter with his grandsons. Greg also had a special place in his heart for the many dogs he had over the years, each one loved as a true member of the family.
Greg’s true passion was working as an airplane mechanic. He loved everything mechanical and had a natural talent for fixing, building, and inventing. He worked in aviation until moving back to Plummer, Minnesota, when Danielle was nine years old. Even after leaving that career, his creativity and mechanical curiosity never slowed down.
Greg was known for creating his own inventions and solutions to everyday problems. There are countless examples, but some memorable ones included his motorized cooler tube handsfree steering, the chair scooter he drove around Plummer with, and a walker modified with a hoverboard. His mind was always working, and he loved the challenge of figuring things out.
A longtime resident of Plummer, Gregory was known for his gentle nature, and quiet resilience. He was always up for a good laugh. The goal in his life was simple—to be happy—and those who knew him would say he truly was.
“Dad passed away peacefully while holding my hand.” Danielle
He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Holmes; her two sons, his beloved grandchildren, Keaden and Silas; siblings Faye (John) Rouland, Roy Holmes Jr., and Rocky L. Holmes; along with neice Tiffany (Travis) Boespflug, nephews Tyler (Alexis) Holmes, Eric (Tarah) Rouland, Aaron (Alana) Rouland, Mason (Morgan) Holmes, and great nieces and great nephews, Brynlie, Havyn, Sutton, Myla, Aubree, Ivana, Brielle, Tate, Emric, Avaline, Analiese, Rhett, Harvey; and friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Vivian Holmes.
Greg will be deeply missed for his youthful, inventive spirit, his quiet strength, and the steady presence he brought to the lives of those who loved him.
A gathering time for family and friends to celebrate Gregory’s life will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN.
