Obituary

Hans Newman, 91, died on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Gary Gilthvedt officiating. Burial will be Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, February 10, 2006 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Hans Henry Newman was born on February 16, 1914 in Lansing Township, Mower County, near Austin, MN, the son of Nels Henry and Anna (Svendsen) Newman. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and attended Country School. His father died when Hans was very young. He was raised and grew to adulthood in rural Thief River Falls and worked as a farm hand in his earlier years. Hans was united in marriage to Ellen Larson on December 16, 1939 in St. Hilaire, MN. He drove a Bread route that covered all of the rural towns around the area. Hans was then employed by Hartz in Thief River Falls, where he was manager in the candy and tobacco department. He retired in 1976 after 30 plus years.

Hans loved to dance, deer hunt, fish, golf, curl and was very active at the Heritage Center in Thief River Falls. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed walking in the woods.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club.

Hans is survived by daughter, Sheryl Newman of Thief River Falls, MN; one brother, Walter Newman of Albert Lea, MN; and several special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, on March 20, 1980; his parents; five brothers: Einer, Jens, Bill, Albert and Elmer; and two sisters: Marie and Mable Ness.
