Harlon Julius Kvick, son of Sture and Florence (Hormann) Kvick was born on December 1, 1936 on the family farm near Wheaton in Walls Township, Traverse County, MN. He was baptized June 11, 1937 and confirmed February 17, 1952 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Wheaton, MN. He attended School District 15 near Wheaton, MN, grades 1 through 8 and attended Wheaton High School, graduating in 1954.
Harlon entered the United States Army on August 24, 1955 and was honorably discharged August 13, 1958. Two of his service years were spent serving in France along with his brother, Orrie.
On August 31, 1963, Harlon was united in marriage to Jeanette Schmidtke at St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton, MN. To this union four children were born: Karl, Kelly, Karen and Kathy.
He was employed with the State Bank of Wheaton from 1958 – 1967 and then began his career with the United States Post Office in Wheaton from 1967 – 1972. He transferred to the Post Office in Thief River Falls, MN in 1972 where he worked until his retirement 1995. In June 2015, Harlon moved into Valley Home in Thief River Falls.
Harlon was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, where he served as an elder and was in the bell choir. In his spare time, Harlon could be found sunning himself, reading a book or putzing in the yard. Through the years, he collected stamps and put them in books to admire. When the weather (and his body) cooperated, Harlon would walk many miles to exercise and stay ahead of his Parkinson diagnosis. At the prodding of his family, Harlon would take up the fishing pole to spend time with his family in a boat. He may not have caught anything but he enjoyed being outdoors. Traveling was a hobby, from the Canadian Rockies to the Grand Canyon, Harlon would pack up his family and see the sights. Most of all he loved time spent with family and grandchildren.
As snowbirds, Jeanie and Harlon spent time in Hawaii and Arizona. With God as his guide, Harlon was a man of honesty and integrity. He was fun-loving and always had a story to tell. He modeled for everyone to work hard and enjoy life. He taught those around him to be caring. These values will carry on through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survived by his wife, Jeanie, sons, Karl (Melanie) Kvick and Kelly (Sue) Kvick all of Thief River Falls; daughters, Karen (Jason) Peterson of Marshall, MN and Kathy (Tom) Vetter of West Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Kristopher (Christina) Kvick, Madi (Marshall) Greene, Sara Mills, Heather (Randy) Einarson, Hailey & Dawson Kvick, Hanna, Olivia & Gavin Peterson, Emerson & Thomas Vetter; great grandchildren, Landyn, Noah & Paxtyn Einarson, Owen Wellman & Kaden Kvick, Maura & Elowen Greene; brother, Robert (Jeanne) Kvick; and brother-in-law, Merton Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
