Harriet Norman of Plummer, MN age 91 died peacefully on Friday, December 11, 2015 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN with her loving family at her side.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer, MN with Rev. John Bumgardner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls, MN. All are invited for a time of lunch and fellowship following the burial at the Plummer American Legion Post.
Harriet Louise Hesse was born on September 30, 1924 in River Township near Plummer, MN the seventh of eleven children born to George and Alma (Lothert) Hesse. She was baptized and confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer, MN. Harriet attended country school near their home and graduated from Pershing High School with the class of 1943.
Along with her sisters, Harriet moved to St. Paul, MN and she worked at the Western Electric Telegraph Company. She worked in Detroit, MI from 1946-1949 and then transferred to Seattle, WA where she met and married, James Edward Norman. They were married at Atonement Lutheran Church on October 21, 1950 and the couple continued to live in Seattle. To this union two children were born, James George on July 28, 1958 and Laurie Louise on September 24, 1960.
Her married years in Seattle, WA were spent enjoying her family, church, School and community. Their home was built on the property given by Jim's folks – a lot back-to-back with the Norman's. She was involved with PTA, Headstart, Room Mother, Camp Fire, Vacation Bible School and Choir. Their yard was the gathering spot for the neighborhood children. Summers were spent on trips to Minnesota and/or camping trips to Eastern Washington with Lauritz's and Pearson's. After seeing her children graduate, Harriet returned to make her home in Plummer, MN in 1982. Harriet continued to return to Seattle to visit her children and grandchildren through the years during the summers and Christmas. In 2012, Harriet moved to Thief River Care Center where she has continued to reside.
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer and was active in the Ladies Aide. She was a member of the Plummer American Legion Auxiliary. Harriet loved the outdoors, spending time with nature, gardening, and was a passionate sports fan.
Harriet always felt blessed to be a Mother and her family was her life.
Survivors include her son, James (Lorraine) Norman of Renton, WA; daughter, Laurie Jones of Issaquah, WA; five grandchildren, Bradley Norman, Alaina Norman, Lisa Jones, Miranda Jones and Stephanie Jones; siblings, Eva (Erling) Lauritz of Burien, WA, Doris Malwitz of Thief River Falls, MN, Melvin (Peggy) Hesse of Plummer, MN, and Ivan Hesse of Red Lake Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Loretta Hesse; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Harriet is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Myrtle (Frank) Ahrens, Helen (William) Simpson, Floyd (Fern) Hesse, Sylvester Hesse, Sarah (Nels) Hansen, Marian (Jack) Pearson, and Donald Hesse.
