Hazel Stromsmoe, 98, died on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Valley Home in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday,July 5, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend John Golv and Reverend Ale Tulu offiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, July 4, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls.
Hazel Marie Stromsmoe of Thief River Falls, MN passed away peacefully on June 30 at the Valley Home, where she had resided for the past two years.

Hazel was born on June 15, 1913 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Canada, the third child of Leona (Dowhower) and Charles Elgin. In 1919 her family returned to Badger, MN, where she graduated from the eighth grade. Although the Elgin family also lived briefly in Spooner, MN and St. Joseph, MO, the Badger farm was always considered home.
On June 15, 1937 (her 24th birthday), Hazel was united in marriage to Garlin M. Stromsmoe, of rural Nielsville, MN. Together they owned and operated the Lakewood Hotel in Williams, MN for eight years, then moved to East Grand Forks, until finally settling in Thief River Falls in December 1953.
Hazel worked at Oakland Park Nursing Home on the dietary staff for 22 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Garlin; her parents; brothers Herl, Clifford , Lewis and Wayne; sisters Ethel Carlson and Eunice Gansauge; sister-in-law Margaret Elgin Copes; and brothers-in-law Carl B. Carlson, Orlin Gansauge and George Hanestad.
She is survived by her daughters, Gail (Murray) Dow of Louisville, KY and Diane (Clarence) Bedenbaugh of Clarkston, MI; four grandsons: Cory Nelson of Arlington Heights, IL; Brandon (Lisa) Nelson of Sawyer, MI; Joshua Nelson of Chicago, IL, and Andrew (Kristi) Dow, of Louisville, KY; six great-grandchildren: Sophia, Mina and Everett Nelson, J.T. Nelson, Karleigh and Brody Dow; two sisters, Rema Hanestad of Thief River Falls and Donna (Carl) Gustafson of Aberdeen, SD; sister-in-law Eunice Elgin of Mesa, AZ; many nieces and nephews, and special friend, Helen Peterson.
