Hazel Whalen, 94 of Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls, MN formerly of Oklee, MN died on Sunday, May 23, 1999 at Oakland Park Nursing Home. Arrangements with Petterson Funeral Home in Oklee, MN.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, May 29, 1999 at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Oklee, MN with Father Joe Richards officiating. Burial will be held in the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Cemetery in Plummer, MN.
Visitation will be held on Friday, 5 " 8 PM with a 7:00 prayer service at the Petterson Funeral Home in Oklee and also one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Hazel Anne Whalen was born July 25, 1904 in Equality Township, Red Lake County, MN near Oklee daughter of Kerence and Margaret (Donahue) Whalen. She was raised and attended rural school there, graduating from high school in Red Lake Falls, MN. She worked at the Hospital in Bemidji, MN. In 1932 she began work as a parish housekeeper in Oklee, worked in Thief River Falls for a time then moving back to Oklee where she worked until her retirement. She continued to live in Oklee until May 31 1993 when she entered the Valley Home in Thief River Falls and in 1997 entered the Oakland Park Nursing Home.
Hazel loved her faith, cooking, gardening, embroidery and needlepoint.
She is survived by her brothers Joseph Whalen of Thief River Falls, MN and Thomas Whalen (Theone) of Huntington Beach, CA: numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, brothers James and George; sisters Sr. Mary Linus, Emma Schirrick, Florence Whalen and an infant sister.
