Hennie Petrine Saxvold was born on June 3, 1923 in Badger Township, Polk County, MN the daughter of Gustav and Berit (Sakrismo) Saxvold. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Landstad Lutheran Church near Gatzke, MN. Hennie attended country school, Middle River High School and graduated from Goodridge High School. Throughout her high school years, she worked "setting pins" at the bowling alley in Grygla, in the potato fields and helping farm families locally and in North Dakota with the children, cooking, and the chores. After high school graduation, Hennie moved to Minneapolis where she worked for a time at a department store. When the war broke out, she moved to Seattle to work wiring on the B-29's for Boeing, later moved to San Francisco where she spot welded in the ship yards and when the war was over worked in a Federal Reserve Bank. Hennie returned to Gatzke to care for her mother in 1946, and went to work at the Henry Holte Implement dealership. On November 3, 1947, Hennie was united in marriage to Otto Hagen at the parsonage in Gatzke, MN. They moved to Seattle, WA where they lived for a short time, then returned to live in the Grygla area. In 1953 the family built their home in Northwood Township where they carved their farm "out of the brush". To this union 9 children were born. Hennie was a very kind, soft-spoken, strong woman who truly cherished her family. She enjoyed picking wild berries, gardening, canning, quilting, sewing, baking all of the Scandinavian goodies, and was especially known for her homemade bread, buns and muffins. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, and felt it important to attend Sunday services together as a family.
