Henry Theodore Hastad, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND with his family at his side. He was 79 years, 7 months, and 14 days old. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held with the family one hour prior to the service. Visitation will also be held from 5-7 PM on Friday, February 14, 2014 with a Prayer Service at 6:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Henry was born June 26, 1934 in Thief River Falls, MN to Lupe (Miramontes) and Henry Hastad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After high school Henry was unable to join the service due to heart issues so he joined the Air National Guard. Henry met his life long sweetheart Arvilla Habedank on the Habedank farm in Mavie in 1950. Henry and Arvilla married on November 19, 1955 the opening day of deer season to which Henry always told how he caught his deer (Dear) that day. Henry worked for Shetler's hatchery until it closed, Western Oil and then the City of Thief River Falls as a Power Plant Operator retiring after 31 years of service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and a volunteer firefighter for 20 years. Henry, a bit of a Jack of all trades, loved camping, biking, and hiking with his family. In his spare time he could be found woodworking, tinkering, sketching or drawing. After Henry retired, when his grandchildren visited he would drive Arvilla and the grandkids out to the refuge, spying deer and naming birds along the way: oriole, golden finch, blue jay. Then, when the lake finally came into view, he would always sing, "Did you knowA pelican's beak can hold more than its belican (belly can)?" He was always putting smiles on everyone's faces. He was Preceded in death by his parents and brother Harold. He is survived by his wife Arvilla (Habedank) of Thief River Falls; son Brian (Vickie) Hastad of Little Elm, TX; daughter Cynthia (Terry) Johnson of Rosemount, MN; grandchildren Dylan Hastad, Bryan Neumann, and Garrett Fomby of Little Elm, Texas, Taylor Johnson of Madison, WI, and Dakota Johnson and Ashleigh Johnson of Rosemount, MN; sisters Deloryce, Doreen, Helen and Sharon; and brother Wayne Jarshaw.
