Herbert Ernest Walter was born in 1917 and raised in Egeland, ND. His parents were Ernest & Caroline (Schumacher) Walter. Herb was the oldest of 5 children, and they moved to Plummer in 1934 during the dust days.

Herb married Esther Purath on September 27, 1940 and they lived in Brooks, and Plummer, MN. Their first child Ernest was born in 1941, and died at 3 days old. They later moved to Oregon to work in a defense plant, along with his brother Wally. Jobs were plentiful during World War 2 and they needed to get away from the sad memories and start a new life. After saving enough money, they moved back to Plummer in 1946 and purchased a farm. The farm was next to Herbs fathers farm and they shared the machinery and worked together. When Herbs Dad died in 1957, he bought the home farm located on the Red Lake/Pennington County line.

Herb and Esther sold the farm to Ray & Roger in 1977 and then moved into Plummer in 1981. Herb lived in town until the fall of 2007 when he moved to Red Lake Falls, assisted living and later to Hillcrest Nursing Home. Esther continues to live at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Herb continued to help with the field work doing what he loved; running the machinery and working the land. He was active in the community and organizations in the area, including the National Farmers Organization, original member of the Senior Housing Board in Plummer and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Herb and Esther enjoyed dancing, and eating out with family and friends. Herb enjoyed playing cards with many friends in Plummer.

Herb and Esther have nine children, June (Jim) Smith of Hugo, MN, Iona Markley of Buffalo, MN, Marvin (Sandra) of Detroit Lakes, MN, Ray (Reinette) of Plummer, Duane (Jamie) of Minot, ND, Barb (Pat) Pinc of Plummer/Hastings, MN, Marilyn (Gene) Budraitis of Luverne, AL, Roger (Janel) of Plummer, MN, David (Gail) of Brookpark, MN. They have 28 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one aunt Martha Blake of Devils Lake, ND and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alfred (Bunny) & Waldemar (Wally), and sisters, Hulda Mitchell and Alfreda (Gresmond) Bruggeman.. and son Ernest.
