Hilda Ardith Satre was born on November 23, 1926 in Veldt Township, Grygla, MN to parents, Nels and Brita (Eikefit) Satre. She graduated from Goodridge High School in 1945. She completed three years of training at Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Forks, ND, and became a Registered Nurse in 1948.
She married Norris Hagen on April 30, 1950 at Grygla, MN, and resided on their farm in Northwood Township since then.
She was an active member of St. Petri Lutheran Church of rural Grygla and a member of the Grygla Homemakers.
Hilda worked as an R.N. in the hospital in Thief River Falls before her marriage and in the hospital in Roseau for many years. Later she did blood pressure checks in Grygla at the Senior Center. She enjoyed her work as a nurse and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed picking berries, gardening, making lefse and baking. A highlight of her life was a trip to Norway in 1999 where she met many relatives including more than a dozen first cousins. She climbed a mountain to see her fathers home place.
Two years later, in 2001, a routine surgery in Rochester resulted in a rupture of the esophagus and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome which she survived after being in a coma and spending 7 months in the hospital. She had to struggle with voice, oxygen, nutrition, and mobility problems since that time with varying success.
Hilda is survived by her husband, Norris; and daughters, Marlene of Grygla and Mavis of Fargo, ND, and sons, Baylen (Jan) of Warroad, and Rodney (Sherri) of Grygla; grandson, Cory Hagen of Salol; 8 step-grandchildren, Geoffrey, Justyne, and Dayle Larson, and Russell, Nolan, Matthew Knochenmus, Jill Thompson and Linnae Dunrud; 11 step-great grandchildren; brother, Grant Satre of Grygla, and sister, Barbara Hylland (Wayne) Lunsetter of Gatzke; several brothers-and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
